I like what you guys are doing, and would like to offer a suggestion. Move the calander above the News Feed. It seem most of your users visit for the forum. By placing above the news feed, it will show up on the top of the page, right below how many active threads there have been since your last visit. This way it'll be right there, no having to scroll down. Just my 2cents.

Smelly... can you say "Video training opportunity" *he says looking Retread's direction and shaking his head* ?

I swear we could make a LOT of money
Retread_OMO Posted - Nov 15 2004 : 16:21:39
Ok I clicked on the claendar tab, from the link at the beginning of this thread...It took me to the OMO homepage, as if Id clicked Home at the top..I clicked on a date..Todays for instance...There is NO drop down anywhere on the page, just a daily, weekly, monthly links to show the calendar differently..maybe Im just missing it....Maybe its how were put into the site...Ive noticed that me and Fuddy and a few others dont have the picture file thing or a few other features, is it file library or somthing like that..Dunno...you guys will figure it out im sure..
SmellyFart Posted - Nov 15 2004 : 16:00:23
OK, I added a "Calendar" tab that takes you to the opening page for the Forums....

OK, for those who are Calendar challenged... Click on a date, that will then bring up a web page with "Add an Event", from the drop down, select the forum where you would like your event listed, I.E. if it's a game of BF1942, put it in that section. Then you are at the normal entry screen for making a post, make the post and your DONE...

The date on the calendar changes to red... so that means there is something there... so MEMBERS, when Arcane moves the Calendar to the top left, LOOK for RED dates... this means there is something on the calendar.... HEY Arcane... may be you should put a note under the calendar.."RED MEANS...."

Ok maybe I might sound stupid....I clicked all forums and went down to the events calander....NOW HOW DO I PUT SOMTHING IN?...thats why I asked about making it user friendly..Im no networking wizard otr IT tech..I work on cars for a living...Agreed no need for 2 calendars..Just one that works a little better for us reular members..even some instuctions..I figured If the members can alter the "games we play" part, why not important dates of the caleadar..And I just posed a simple question od it it COULD be done...No big deal, I more important things to deal with

HAIL HITLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arcane.... I hate to say it, but you and I need to remember... (or so I have been reminded over and over) that few people even know how to turn on their computers... I'm reminded there are people like you and I who understand this stuff, and there are end users.... and we who know understand just how incompetent end users are... but god bless them... they make Bill Gates rich...

Oh.. PS... I appreciate and thank you for everything you do....

Thanks Smelly
Arcane Posted - Nov 15 2004 : 14:16:22
It's real easy to move stuff around but I've haven't since the last change 'cause no one said anything.

So here is what I'll do. I'll move the Events under OMO Resources. Right below that will be Donate to the OMO Game Server.

Oh notice that if you click on Events OR All Forum -> Events Calendar... there is a FULL page of calendar stuff
SmellyFart Posted - Nov 15 2004 : 13:15:05
Hey Arcane, two things.... first, what the chance of reorganizing the forum home page, and putting the calendar up to the top left rather than bottom left ( I never noticed the calendar myself, since I only look for new posts and boom off I go..)... guys might use it then.... If we do that I can make a simple static link to the forum home page and call it "Calendar of Events" on the .com and then change the name on the Forum page to "Calendar of Events", that takes people to forum page with the calendar and were done...

I agree, keeping the web realitively static is a good idea... and I don't think I want to invest a lot of money ( I need to upgrade to FP 2003 to build and make the calendar work, and install some kind of data base and on and on to your server, hey may be everyone in the club could load Outlook and I can link their outlooks to the calendar...hey I bet most of our guys don't even know there's a calendar in outlook lets "KISS" "Keep it simple stupid ), that's more time and money... First I want to see some of the guys put their games and game pages up... people complain that no one plays their games and they leave the clud, well here's the perfect way to fix that... lets see some people step up to the game pages before we invest any more time and money as a first step...

SECOND... where do you want me to load up the web to so you can play around with it.. PM me...

Thanks

Smelly
Arcane Posted - Nov 15 2004 : 12:51:09
Why add another calendar when we already have one here on the forum that no one uses?

Also, to make a calendar function properly you will need to support dynamic pages (.asp, .aspx, .php, etc) Right now Smelly's site is static.

We do have a lot of functionality on the SitePortal that no one uses. Check out the "Home" page once in a while
Retread_OMO Posted - Nov 15 2004 : 11:45:39

Well, having a current month and next month calendar of events can certianly be done, but at the moment it is beyond my expertise and skill level, I will look into it, but the question is do we have anyone in the club who is good at visual basis, or java and could develop these pages without me having to relearn these skills and build and test these calendars, which could take me months.

The calendar would be two pages, current month and next month, using the web theme ( I used Front Page 2002, we might need 2003 and special software on the server). We would need a web interface, a web page that can be hidden or secured via a password for data entry… with the ability to select the year, month and day for entry and say 2, 15 or 20 character entries that would be sent to a database resident on the servers and store by year, month, day, and two lines of data. I'm not sure what databases Arcane has on the server, but a simple one would do, not sure if Aracne runs Linx or MS.

The web page for “current month and next month” would via the date clock on the server, load the appropriate entries from the database and display them in the calendar for the current month and next month when the page is displayed.

I’m not sure how easy or hard this is to do. Knowing our members it should be as easy to use as possible...

NOW while I'm on the subject, when are some other guys going to step up and give me a list of some of the current games, former games and future games, so I don't have to guess and develope some pages for these games.... how about some other people jumping on the band wagon to help. Remember, you have no right to bitch about people not playing your games UNLESS you pitch in and get your game listed and develope the web page or at least collect the required data.

Thanks,

Smelly

Then I guess were all gonna be a buncha friggin Nazi's...Id be happy to contribute my two cents..Dont care if someone calls me Mussolini or Spegetti...LOL

Since it seems to be more usere friendly and member "updateable" I guess would be the phrase...Can we incorperate the calendar the same way...I had real trouble trying to list our scrimmage on the one we have, and finally gave up..

Yeah, that would be nice.

Great opportunity for you guys to house clean and make some long delayed and much needed changes too. There's even the links there to do stuff like that. Of course if someone tried that we all know what would happen.

Hitler would be joined by some other dictator. Marcos? Mussolini? Franco? Or maybe it would just be some other nazi...
