Posted - Mar 02 2003 : 20:59:51 My comp has been really doggy lately. I went to PC Pitstop and ran one of their test. It found some programs running in the background. Even though when I do the ctrl-alt delete thing I see the programs...and can temporarily shut them down. However, I have no idea how to just shut them down permamently. Anyone have any idea where to find them. fyi they are.....
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CTFMON.EXE SAYS IT'S "OFFICE XP SPEECH" ( I have 98SE)
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MDM.EXE SAYS IT'S A "DEBUGGER" (wouldn't know how to debug if I had to)
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\STIMON.EXE SAYS IT'S A "STILL IMAGE MONITOR". Have no idea.

Posted - Mar 03 2003 : 04:57:37 well.....i found each of the programs in the systems files. I tried clicking on them and nothing happened. I also right clicked on them and went to propertys. Most were installed in 99 and 2001. Funny thing is I've only had this laptop for about 2 years now. How would you find, or where would you look to find out if there's a setup program for them? The only way I know to do that is to click on the exe and it would normally go right into setup. |

Posted - Mar 02 2003 : 23:05:16 Office XP is not dependant upon Windows XP - two different beasts. Question is: what have you installed as of late that would include Office XP speech? Also, did you check for the .exe on these to see if there is a setup for them? I suppose you can also look for their keys in the registry.
OR: you could be daring, back up your files and data, reformat, reinstall, and otherwise clean your comp. It is amazing how much better win98 runs with a fresh install. Even defraging will help. |
