I'm duplicating this post from my boards because I know many of you guys are too lazy to register at our boards and I know some of you ride bikes.

Anyother biking types with experience in this area, do you have any knowledge of comm systems for bikes?

I'm thinking of picking one up that's "bike to bike" rather than "rider to passenger" and I was hoping for some suggestions from people that might have used a system.

Midland makes one that looks pretty good, and very reasonable in price;

http://www.midlandradio.com/Bluetooth-Intercom-Systems.3NN/BT2-D

Then there is Cardo/scala;

http://www.cardosystems.com/scala-rider/scala-rider-q2

and Bikeintercom;

http://www.bikeintercom.com/products/bluetooth.htm

and finally Collet which is pricier but looks very nice. They reccommend the Racefone 2;

http://www.collett.mb.ca/

Any suggestions?

some of the guys i ride with use CBs, here is a link to the one they use http://www.cycleaccessorystore.com/category-s/3.htm Have been considering it myself. not only is it a CB for bike to bike communication, but it has NOAA weather band, rider/passenger intercom and stereo music, I think the guys blue tooth thier iphones, ipods through it but not sure on that. Expensive but small and convenient. Also, if you get split up and get more than a mile apart your more likely to be able to reach out with a CB.

I know nothing about communications. However, I do jump on my mower and mow 8 acres almost every weekend and I listen to my ipod. Usually, Glenn Beck or Rush shows I missed during the week. Anyway..I have tried several earphones trying to get past the loud noise of the mower. I don't wear the big earphones because I usually get a little sunburned and it always looked funky with my white ears.
However, the best noise reduction, sound quality earplugs I have found are the Sony earplugs with the interchangable ear piece that adjust small-med-large. They are a little pricey (about 100.00us) but they work great. Inside a helmet I would think these would be the way to go..

Just an update for the Bikers here, I put in an offer on a system.

The Scala Rider G4 powerset. http://www.cardosystems.com/us/scala-rider/scala-rider-g4-powerset

It consists of 2 complete systems (enough for 2 Helmets).

I offered a vendor on Ebay.ca $400, which is $300 less than my local deal wants for them. If I get them I wil let you know how they work.

TLBFestus Posted - Apr 28 2010 : 15:18:07
Do you use these Kayjay?

I'm not sure I'd want ear buds as opposed to little speakers mounted (velcro'd) inside the helmet.

Vanquish throat Mic + FRS/GMRS Radio = Cheap
http://firefoxtechnologies.zoovy.com/product/FF-V/Vanquish-Throat-Mic.html

Total cost, $150 per user. Less, for crappier radios.

Hey Batty good to hear from ya!

Come on Festus... the best bit about being on a bike is you don't have to speak to anyone.

On the subject of bikes just added another to the stable.

It's a 77' in a Santee Swingarm frame.

I have had a good wired set in the box for a year now. I'm told the CB is the best way as bluetooth is not "there" yet for comm. I hate wires big time, but I decided I did want clarity for music and passenger to passenger. Haven't gotten the CB yet though.

It's been a few years now, but for auto racing (instructor to student and lead instructor to instructors) we use to use Scala stuff. No idea what model it was, but it was wireless and worked well with in say 1/4 mile or so. After 1/4 mile it tended to break up a bit. It all sounded good and clear when in range and easy to set up.

My guess is the new stuff is very good in comparison.
