I have a woman friend in her fortys getting her concealed liscense. She handles a gun pretty good but still a rooky. What would be a good pistol for her?

And dogs never run out of ammunition.

Since I'm a Canuck, I don't get all excited about toting firearms for personal protection but I can understand your need/willingness to do so. I guess things are just a little less "intense" up here in Lotus Land. Not that I haven't noticed things changing, and with that I might change one day.

Anyhoo, we have a lovely, loyal, friendly as heck female German Shepherd at home named Storm. She only weighs about 80 pounds (males can top 100 easily), but she has very big teeth and barks like she weighs 120 pounds.

We have several big windows in the front room and she keeps an eye on the street during the day and will bark like mad at other dogs or sometimes just certain people. She looks ferocious as hell behind that glass, but is really a teddy bear that can't wait to greet people. We've raised her as a family dog and she is very gentle.

We've never been in a situation where she has felt we are in danger, but somehow I just know that she would take a very big chunk out of anyone that attacked my family. Having wrestled with her I'm amazed at how fast, flexible and quick these dogs are. You think you can grab them and control them, but you can't unless they let you.

Her favorite toy is a Soccer Ball. We throw/kick it and she bolts ofter it, and usually grab is mid bounce. Those teeth are big and she can bite so the ball doesn't stay inflated very long. She gnaws branches, the bigger the better. I've seen her gnaw through a 6 inch diameter piece of pine in a few minutes. I hate to think what she'd do to a leg.

Who said anything about actually "owning" a dog? build a big ass dog house with a huge chew bone in plain sight.
Nosehair-OMO Posted - Nov 09 2010 : 17:29:02
Dang...is that YOU in the siggy Bloody?!?!?
Expired-OMO Posted - Nov 09 2010 : 15:22:15
That is true about the "vicious dog" sign....However there is a much better one. A simple plaque on the door stating " Life Time Member of the NRA" works wonders and provides no liability.
Bloody Posted - Nov 09 2010 : 07:43:44
LOL.

I shy away from putting up a sign, as there are certain laws that indicate if you have such a sign, you are admitting guilt in any attack by your dog. Crazy, but true I hear.

I have heard also that an American flag out front of your house is the #1 deterrent to criminals.
Fossil-OMO Posted - Nov 08 2010 : 20:20:10
As a former cable guy, a sign that said Beware of dog was enough for me to say that I had disconnected that persons cable. Just

So guess I would be "safe" with my Irish Wolfhound and my Mossburg semi auto 12 gauge. ;)
Expired-OMO Posted - Nov 07 2010 : 13:05:46
Same goes for a Rottweiler, no ammo needed just a hand full of puppychow.
Old Bugger OMO Posted - Nov 07 2010 : 12:22:24
For home defense nothin beats a pump shotgun. Dont even need ammo. If you hear someone break in just give it a pump and you will hear them breaking out.
Fossil-OMO Posted - Nov 03 2010 : 13:55:09
ASP is what your talking about Bugger, I just got one of those Chinese made ones at last weeks gun show for 10 bucks(probably only work once). I got my wife a taser for 30 bucks as well. She really likes the Ruger .380 with the laser sight and my brother in law has an LCR 38 revolver like in the pic above that is very nice as well. remember light weight is better, carrying around a canon is ok for home but out an about you want something that you don't notice.

I have an A-5 Tippmann that that I shoot people all time with on the weekends...

There is another option that most would not consider. The Collapsible Baton. It is not legal to carry without a license so she would still need that. It is easy to use, fits in a purse, requires no ammo and generally only hits what your aiming at.

If you have never seen one it is basically a telescoping mace designed to break bones. A single overhand blow to the shoulder will stop even the most determaned crack-head. It is a deadly weapon and can kill so she would still be a risk for legal issues. It would not have the stigma a gun would so even if used the backlash would be a lot less.

Wont work in tight quarters like your car so she would need to carry peperspray or a tazer as well. Or my fav car defense device.....the flare gun

I think I could get a license for those. :^0

Well, she makes me nervous carrying a gun. Someone told me once that if you ever pull your gun and shoot it, be prepared to spend 15g's no matter whos at fault... She's going to a gun range and shooting. If you insists I think she need a semi either 9mm or 38..But, its her world...

Being a CCL owner/user, I agree with Bluehair on this one. In fact, my opinion is that CCL's should only be available to those that have a min. of hours on the range. Our state doesn't even require any firing of a weapon and a whopping 4 hours of in class training (read that as mostly law review). I was lucky enough to have an instructor that required us to be proficient with both revolvers and semi autos to pass her class.

As for the law, that is a big issue and each state is drastically different. Tell her to read the entire CCL rules and regs for your state. It can be a bit overwhelming to experienced firearms handlers, let alone a newbie. Example for my state is the domicile rule (domicile = home), where our garages are not considered part of our domicile (connected garage or not), but our automobiles are. In other words, draw a firearm on bad guy in your garage could be bad (most the time it's not, but legally it is). Where as the guy that was almost car jacked down the street from us was cleared of everything except a vehicle registration issue, when he drew a firearm on a road rager that opened the guys door at a stoplight to punch him out/pick a fight. Point is, each state is very different and you better know each and every law.

So having said all this, she is probably dead set on the idea for some reason. My recommendation would be the same as Bentprop and that is to go to the gun store / range (don't bother with a store without a range in my opinion). Not only look at, handle and learn about each "carry" model, but go fire the top 3-5. Also, she may want to start out on something small (22LR) and move up the range to something big (45 ACP). Back when I was trying to decide what to carry, I had fired and or owned all but the .40 and .45 calibers. Because my brother (former detective) had carried 10mm and now used .40 I was looking in that direction first. I knew I didn't want to go too small and to low a stopping power (if I have to shoot someone I have full intention they will die on the spot), and my .38s, 9mm, etc would be short of what I wanted / needed. I fired both the .40 (couple brands) and the .45 (couple brands) and the .40 was horrible in my opinion. Way to snappy (both laterally and horizontally). I loved the .45 and am very pleased with both my Para .45 carry weapon and my .45 XD for home use.

EXACTLY my thought petri.

I was logging on to say get a Nelspot 007.

I used one for years when I ran a paintball company.
Petrified-OMO Posted - Oct 20 2010 : 20:44:54
I say a good way to learn how to fire live rounds at a living person is this gun.

My first was a Nel Spot 007.
BluehairOMO Posted - Oct 20 2010 : 16:30:45

Tazer for public(i have no clue on the legality of carrying real tazers that fire the darts), semi-auto Shotgun for home. A Tazer would have a longer accurate range than the ruger in the picture with its teeny @ss barrel. :)

Killing someone at home in self defense is easy to handle in a legal sense. In public, not so much. Since any pistol training will involve aiming for center of mass, concealed carry for any rookie gun owner is risky.

She has to be secure in her ability to end a life, and be ready to face the legal hassles of an in-public shooting.

Anything in .38 caliber short that she can comfortably carry and use would be my reccomendation. Smaller rounds may not do the job, and more powder and/or lead may turn the weapon into basically a one-shot deal as the rest will walk up from the recoil.

Concealed carry for a new gun owner is never a good idea IMHO. It has zero deterent value, and her skils and mindset may not be up to the moment if it comes. Tazer, mace, personal alarm, hell a flash-bang grenade would be better.

If she really wants to carry, then she needs real practice on a combat course. I doubt she will ever be attacked by a black dot.
BentProp-OMO Posted - Oct 20 2010 : 14:08:09
So many choices! She needs to go to a gun shop and handle several different ones to see what feels good to her. Ideally she should go to a gun range that rents guns so that she can see what they actually feel like to shoot.

My wife is new to guns also and does not feel very comfortable firing my semi-auto pistols but really liked the simplicity and reliability of a revolver. After handling several she decided on a Ruger LCR. Very light weight with a very smooth trigger. It is available with a laser sight that makes aiming very easy. It comes in a .38 special and a .357 version but the recoil on the 357 might be quite a handfull.
