Ok, let's try something.

Facebook has it's Throwback Thursday, how about a Tuesday Bluesday?

R.L. Burnside (November 23, 1926 – September 1, 2005)

One of the North Mississippi hill country blues men, he sometimes went by "Rule" Burnside.

See My Jumper Hangin' on the Line

So, what's this song about?

From a 1993 article in the Baltimore Sun...

"The old-time blues is what my friend and I got as he launched into "Jumper on the Line," a song he performed in the documentary "Deep Blues," which was shown earlier this month at the Orpheum Cinema in Fells Point.

Now what do you think a title like "Jumper on the Line" means?

"... I thought maybe it was about fishing. It is, sort of.

Mr. Burnside, eyes wide in the joy of making others happy, sang out in a high voice: "See my jumper, Lord, oh hangin' on the line. . . yes, I see my jumper, oh lord, a hangin' on the line. . .

When I see my jumper, you know there's somethin' on my mind. . ."

Call it espionage of the heart. In blues lore, if a married woman hangs her housecoat or "jumper" out on the clothesline, it's a sign to her lover that the coast is clear."

Feel free to add your own if you like.

Check back next Tuesday (if I remember ...)

I finally remembered to post this one (on a Tuesday).

They Call it Stormy Monday (but Tuesday's Just as Bad), featuring an amazing lineup of guitar players.

Great video! Pretty good song too

So much for keeping this thread going huh?

Anyway ...

When Boogie with Stu first came out, I didn't like it very much. But this video has changed my mind.

The guy featured is Mexican comedian and dancer named Adalberto Ramirez "Resortes", who is sometimes credited with inventing the "moonwalk".

The Stu is Ian Stewart, founding member of the Rolling Stones and he's playing the piano. I've seen a rumor that the guitar is Robert Plant. That comes from a story that includes John Paul Jones (who plays the mandolin) saying, "it can't be that hard to play, even Robert can play it!"

The song is based on Oooh My Head by Richie Valens. Check out Chuck Barry in this clip!

Led Zeppelin gave Richie Valens' mother writing credit on Boogie with Stu since they'd heard she never received any royalties from his music. Bob Keane, who co-wrote the Ooh My Head sued them anyways. Valen's mother got half of the settlement.

First, a personal update. I'm no longer a contributing member of society. I'm no longer a member of the workforce, having begun a vacation from which I will not return because I'll be retired by then.

Regarding this thread, it may mean that I keep up with it more often. It could also mean I forget what day it is since working does assist with that.

Anyways...

Taj Mahal's and Ry Cooder's version of Statesboro Blues.

Rumble by Link Wray has the distinction of being the only instrumental song to be banned from the radio in the US. The song reached the top 20 in 1958 and was one of the earliest songs to use distortion and tremolo.

Link Wray was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His introduction was provided by Jimmy Page, who considered him to be his idol.

Here's Link Wray himself performing Rumble in 1974.

I was supposed to see John Hiatt tomorrow night, but then he canceled his tour after a fall while hiking in South Cumberland State Park.

So, to salve my disappointment at missing the show ... and in honor of convalescence.

Here's a cover version of one of my favorite John Hiatt tunes.

Get well. Maybe I'll catch you next year.

Ok, I know it isn't Tuesday and this is kind of a repeat and kind of late at that. I figure by Tuesday, I'd just forget.

David Lindley died about a month ago from complications associated with long COVID.

Here's his version of Soul of a Man.

I first heard this version on the TV show Hell on Wheels. Pretty good show, actually.

Rest in Peace, Prince of Polyester.

Molly Tuttle is one of the best guitar players I've seen (though I haven't seen her in person). She's a master of flat picking, clawhammer and cross picking and is the first woman to win the International Bluegrass Music Association's Guitar Player of the Year Award.

When she was 3 years old, she was diagnosed with alopecia areata, which quickly developed into alopecia universalis, which is an autoimmune disorder that results in total loss of body hair.

Here she is with her version of White Freightliner Blues.

I've featured this song before, but this time I'm adding a personal story.

About 10 years ago, my wife gave me guitar lessons for Christmas. She's always coming up with unique, thoughtful and completely unexpected Christmas gifts. This year it was a drone. (Her other thought was a VR headset. I dodged a bullet on that one, since I image she'd have probably gotten me an Oculus one. BTW, the weather her ehasn't been particularly conducive to drone flying, so I haven't taken it out yet.)

Anyways ...

I contacted the lady that did the lessons and her approach started with "What do you want to play?" I told her that I'd really like to learn Deep River Blues the way Doc Watson plays it. I already knew chords so I wasn't a complete beginner (but not far from one...). We set a time for Wednesday evenings and I started taking lessons.

I little background. She loves classical guitar and she's pretty good. She also likes Irish music and plays in a local Irish band. They already had a guitarist, so she plays the bouzoki. She also pushes the benefits of playing music to keep your brain sharp - especially for seniors ...

That's her in the back.

Anyways, (again ...)

Based on my desire to learn Deep River Blues, she set out trying to teach me Travis picking - named after Merle Travis, who made it famous in his country music. It dates much earlier to Piedmont style blues. I never got to the point that I could play it, but I still have the lessons she gave me. I ended up quitting due to psoriasis in my fingers and the fact that I rarely practiced between lessons.

Here's what I was shooting for...

My dermatologist now has me on medications that control the psoriasis fairly well and I'm thinking of things to do with my time in retirement. So, it's time to take another run at it.

It's been awhile...

So, let's get back into it with something slow and with a classic sound.

Here's Keith Richards and James Cotton rehearsing Little Red rooster.

When I watched this video more closely, it looked like there was something off about the guitar he's playing. It has 10 strings. fI looked into it further (and if you're a Rolling Stones fan, you probably already know this...) and found Keith Richards generally removes the low E string. He says it gets in the way and the bass player can pick up those notes anyways. So, what he's playing must be a custom 10 string version of a 12 string guitar.

Anyways, I love the nice roots sound these guys got.

Hey Petri and Medicated. Good to see you guys are still around. One of the main reasons I keep the site up... even if we aren't playin together it is always nice to hear from old friends.
Petrified-OMO Posted - May 14 2021 : 21:13:56
OWO OMO.

Been awhile. Usually running into Medicated in Cold War. Otherwise getting ready for the nest to be emptied (all at once which is a bit of a shock) and cursing Oracle for changing naming schemes every few releases. Makes using older docs to know how to do things useless sometimes.
