I know this is late. Honestly, I wasn't convinced I still had it in me. Finding interesting things to write about is getting to be difficult by the 5th year. I started it a few days ago and found I'd duplicated things from past years.

Another benefit of starting late is that there are fewer days to fill...

Are you filled with the Christmas spirit yet?

So, without further ado ...

Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel, as performed by the Choir of King's College, Cambridge.

I've written here a few times about Santa.

A little girl in upstate New York has proof!

Merry Christmas, old friends!

God Rest You Merry Gentlemen is one of the oldest extant carols and dates from the 16th century or earlier.

The first line is an example of manners of speech that are no longer in practice. In the carol, the term "rest" means "to keep, to cause to continue or to remain". So, a modern translation would be something like God keeps you merry, gentlemen (or to be completely modern, people or folks might replace gentlemen ... I know I like it when the women in my life are merry as well.) Getting further into the archaic grammar aspect, although it's often song with "ye" instead of "you", this is not grammatically correct because it refers to a direct object rather than indirect object of a verb.

So, my gift to you this Christmas is a gift of archaic grammar! Are you feeling merry?

Anyway, here's a modern interpretation of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen ... which you now know is grammatically incorrect.

I hope you and your families have the merriest Christmas.

Merry Christmas, old friends!

I'd be remiss if I didn't also include another holiday during this time of year. No, it's not Kwanzaa. That's not until the 26th.

It's Festivus.

Although Festivus gained national attention from Seinfeld, it actually dates from 1966 and is the creation of author Daniel O'Keefe. He started the holiday to commemorate his first date with his wife Deborah 3 years earlier. His eldest son, also named Daniel O'Keefe, was a writer for Seinfeld and featured it in an episode entitled The Strike.

A Festivus celebration involves a dinner, a Festivus pole, the airing of grievances, feats of strength and, of course, various miracles.

This one isn't an advent related post, but I thought I'd do something a bit more inclusive today.

Hanukkah begins at sunset this evening. If you're an gentile (or goy), like myself, you probably have no idea what Hanukkah is all about.

Fear not, here's the scoop.

Chag Urim Sameach!

There comes a time, in the life of an elf on the shelf, when he thinks it's time for a change...

Back in December 1978, songwriter Randy Brooks was sitting in with Elmo and Patsy Shropshire for one of their performances at the Hyatt Lake Tahoe and performed a song he'd recently written Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer. The song went over well and the Shropshires asked him to give them a cassette so they could learn it themselves. They recorded it the following year and self published it in San Francisco.

And the rest is ... a piece of Christmas history.

The Shropshires divorced in 1985, but Elmo kept recording as Dr Elmo (he's a veterinarian) and he's also a competitive runner, including being an age group national champion in the U.S. 5K Cross Country Championship in 2018 and is ranked #1 in the 5K.

It's turn out that navigating by a star can be a little imprecise...

Ok let's be honest, Santa's Christmas voyage is basically a home invasion.

Santa's had a few thousand years to develop his process and it goes smoothly. Stewie and Brian found out otherwise things can go terribly wrong...

I've often thought that the Christmas carol, We Wish You a Merry Christmas was kind of weird. After all, it has people wandering around both simultaneously wishing you a merry Christmas, but also making demands and mild threats ... hardly in the Christmas spirit, right?

The carol originates in the West Country of England - Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, and Somerset. Composer, Arthur Warrell is responsible for its modern popularity, having made an arrangement in 1935. (He used "I" instead of "we", by the way.) It seems to date from the 1830's and included these lyrics.

We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy new year;
A pocket full of money,
And a cellar full of beer.

I can get behind that.

But, what the heck is a figgy pudding? It turns out the modern version doesn't contain any figs. (The one from medieval times does though.) And, at least to Americans, isn't a pudding either. Pudding is a generic term for dessert in England, but it's more of a cake.

What is figgy pudding?

... in case you were wondering about the medieval version.

Seriously, How, does Santa get those elves to make all those toys?

Gayla Peevey is a former singer and child star from Oklahoma City. She's is best known for the 1953 song I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas. The Oklahoma City Zoo capitalized on the popularity of the song and tied a fund raiser and raised $3,000 to purchase a baby pygmy hippopotamus and name her Matilda.

Matilda died in 1998, but Ms. Peevey, now married with a daughter and three grandchildren is still with us.

My wife and I always think we go overboard each Christmas.

But when you're a wise guy, you might need to be a little extra careful. <-- Language warning!

George Fridric Handel (1685-1759), was a German composer, who, in 1741, composed the English language oratorio, Messiah. It was first performed in Dublin on April 4, 1742. Handel had been living in England since 1712 and, initially, composed most of his works in Italian. In response to public taste, he began composing works in English around 1730.

Messiah was originally written as a modest work, but has since been adapted to larger and larger scale performances. It is an oratorio in three parts and recounts the story of Jesus from prophecy of His birth until His death and resurrection through the first tow parts. Part 3 addresses the significance of Jesus' and the grace offered by His life to mankind.

Interestingly, the most well-known part of Messiah is actually within the second part, after the crucifixion and resurrection, so one could argue it was meant more as an Easter celebration rather than Christmas. Be that as it may, it's a common part of every Christmas.

What's an oratorio? It's basically the same thing as an opera, but in the case of an oratorio, it's intended to be performed as a concert rather than as musical theater.

Hallelujah (anthem and fugue chorus), from Handel's Messiah, as performed by the Mormon Tabernacle choir and orchestra.

Every year, thousands take part-time, seasonal jobs playing the role of Santa.

Imagine, if you will, someone wildly overqualified ...

... or, at least, someone who thinks he's wildly overqualified.
