Posted - May 14 2021 : 21:10:57 Signed up for the Beta, but it is not yet available here in West Virginia, at least the area I am in. At $99 it will be cheaper than comcast's cable or Frontier's DSL. Main bonus will be when its coverage is more complete allowing you to run an RV around the country and frag before bed time. And, for people not close enough for a solid connection, this will be a great thing. |

Posted - Feb 11 2021 : 08:43:16 wellll, i manage .... some what...using Hughes satellite, my latency is usually a couple of seconds behind evryone else in the game. neverless i still enjoy it, but i still cant wait to get Starlink, have paid a deposit on one. Just not being restricted to 50GiGs per month is a super bonus, to be able to watch or record something in 4k, sounds like a winner to me lol, already planning on buying a projector, sobs aint cheap

Posted - Sep 30 2020 : 07:18:56 I've seen a claimed 25-35 ms latency, though PC Mag claims 18-19 ms. Beta testing is currently showing a latency on the order of 40- 50 ms (for roundtrip). I'm wondering if the lower latency claims are 1 way.
Anything under 50 ms would be ok for gaming, under 30 ms preferred.
I was skeptical about Starlink's claims so, I looked up how they can do it. The latency of other satellite internet systems is all about the transport time to and from the satellite - meaning the physics doesn't support anything faster. I found out, to my surprise that, aside from having tons of satellites (which astronomers hate, BTW), their satellites are only 340 miles up (vs. ~22,000 miles for other satellite internet), so the physics does check out. |

Posted - Sep 29 2020 : 19:48:44 SpaceX StarLink is supposedly 20msec vs 500ms the previous offerings. Sounds reasonable. Don't know about prices though. |
