Posted - Oct 20 2020 : 10:32:47 With some of you guys playing Elite Dangerous, I checked it out on YouTube again recently and noticed some of the channels talking about VR.
So, I checked into the current state of VR headsets and wow! The Oculus Quest 2 looks really nice ... and the price has come down to something kind of reasonable. Also, the minimum CPU and GPU requirements are almost trivial with current PC's (even laptops).
One hitch (aside from the fact that it requires a PC) is that it requires a Facebook account. I guess that's not surprising since they bought Oculus... I see that as a huge downside.
Have any of you checked out any VR peripherals yet? If so, what did you think?
It sounds and looks pretty cool.
Of course, it you really wanted to kick it up a notch... |

My wife and kids bought me a Valve Index for Christmas this year. It put a tear or two in my eye when I opened it and saw what it was.
I really enjoy it but the game types are somewhat limited IMHO. That said, I'll tell you what it's good at. It makes me enjoy exercising.
I have 6-8 titles currently, but my favorites are;
Synth Riders. It's a dance/rhythm game that get get this old man moving.

I enjoy it so much that I sprung for the entire music catalog after a month. The video doesn't do it justice, but if you are looking for an excuse to game and get some light exercise I highly recommend it.
Beat Saber.

Same as Synth riders, but different mechanics whereby instead of riding rails and punching orbs, you have to slice colored cubes in specific directions as shown of the face of the cubes as they come at you. It's a toss up which one you might like better, but I'm into Synth Riders. You can still work up a sweat tho.
Pistol Whip.

This ones fun too. As my friend says, "it makes you feel like a badass". Basically a rail shooter where you have to shoot the bad guys while dodging their bullets (think bullet time) and obstacles to music. Enjoyable.
Finally......
The Thrill of the Fight.
https://youtu.be/eB6gYf3qd0E
It's a boxing simulation. Another online buddy told me about this and warned me at the time..."take it easy, you can get worn out real fast". Naturally I didn't listen to him and after my first session I don't think I could lift my arms for a week. This gives you a real workout, I kid you not. It is, however, a blast to punch things.
you don't punch lightly..you end up throwing real punches and I gotta warn you...BE CAREFUL. Last time I played it I accidentally punched the wall and broke my controller, putting me out of action for a month while it was off for repairs.
I've played games like Alyx Halflife and Walking Dead on the set, but honestly, the movement schemes are kinda clunky and they are just kind "meh" once you get past the 3D thing. |

Posted - Aug 29 2022 : 16:57:52 My wife brought an OQ2 headset this evening. It belongs to her boss.
My impressions:
I couldn’t get the text as sharp as I’d like and I ended up feeling kind of nauseous and headaches were starting to set in. I guess I could’ve played around with it some more, but I didn’t want to monkey around with somebody else’s stuff. I didn’t notice much of a screen door effect. The audio was pretty cool.
I never got out of a chair. It’s tight in the room I was in and I didn’t want to chance getting hurt, so I guess I didn’t get the full effect. I also have problems with vertigo which makes me extra cautious.
The few things I could figure out to try were kind of hit or miss some cool, others meh.
I see what you meant, Arcane, about not being able to find things that readily fall to your hands. It’s kind of isolating and I don’t see a simple way around that. How could you balance VR realism with AR? I think for VR to work well in a game, you’d really need to use the included controllers. VR enable HOTAS anyone?
Interesting, but not sure it’s for me - especially since I’m still getting used Tobii. And above all (at least for OQ2), I’m not getting a FB account.

Posted - Oct 20 2020 : 16:28:14 Aged I fly in VR with Oculus Rift and it is the SICKEST thing period. Great game and way cooler in VR. Vive is a good alternative to Oculus. Get the game and get in with Me, FuddyDud, Relic and Bypass. Relic and I are the ones who have VR |

Posted - Oct 20 2020 : 16:27:51 No FB account ever... OQ2 is dead to me.
Valve Index Headset is what I'd get if I was looking at VR. I still get the screen door effect with current versions and it gives me a very bad headache after an hour or so.
It will eventually get there but right now VR is still... awkward. There isn't a better way to describe it. Not to mention that the only version that allows passthru vision (the ability to see the real-world w/o taking off the headset) is AR like the HoloLense. While you can alleviate most keyboard functions using VoiceAttack or the like... it isn't 100% and is just a pain in the ass in general. |
