Posted - May 06 2011 : 06:18:05 So with the Playstation network down for the last 3-4 weeks I have been playing very little Fifa 11. No WoW, Rift, etc either, so I have been messing with different games.
One really simple (and sorta dumb on the surface) game I started goofing with is Minecraft. Everyone has heard of it cause it's been so popular since the maker started Alpha testing many moons ago. The game is now in Beta (means you need to buy the game to play now, but you get access to beta and all further testing along with the full release this fall).
The game is simple and fun and so addictive. You get the idea of the game from the name. You mine (for resources) and Craft (make stuff from resources). There is PvP, PvE, and all kinds of different game play depending on what server you play on. In single player, you simply mine and craft during the day and then either hide or fight all the creatures at night (they only come out at night).
If any of you happen to play Minecraft, hit me up with a PM or reply here so we can find each other on a server.
P.S. I have a small server running off my system that I could give access to a couple players. |

Posted - Aug 12 2011 : 17:29:27 Yet another changed:
We lost our old host (went out of business), so I have signed up on another hosting company and we started a very cool world using the RoughSauce seed. I have spent the last 4-5 days building (in game, MCedit, imports) a spawn city, 5 outer towns, etc.
I have to re whitelist people (as we lost all that) so if your interested, send me a PM and I will get you whitelisted and get you the IP, etc. |

Posted - Jul 06 2011 : 14:42:37 Yeah I wanted to try it out before you closed it down, my oldest girl was looking over my shoulder so much telling me to go check out everything I finally gave up and let her have at it. |

Posted - Jul 06 2011 : 12:01:31 The one I have been running is up to 12 players (on at one time) and is about $21 / month. Some companies host Minecraft servers, but use run of the mill game servers and they lag like hell. I suggest you use a dedicated minecraft host company.
Let me know if you, your bro, etc want to be whitelisted on our server. We are running a very strange map (think Sahara desert and raiders of the lost ark) with both desert and standard areas. |

Posted - Jul 06 2011 : 09:04:18 One of my bro's hosts it at home and if by whitelisted you mean private, then yes.
There are only 3 of us on it currently.
It's a ridiculously addictive sandbox game, which depending on whether you like to amuse yourself or have concrete goals, might or might not be for everyone.
I refer to it as MINECRACK.
I'm considering dishing out and renting a server for 6 months just for the hell of it. I think you can get them for about 8 bucks a month for a 4 player server.

Posted - Jul 05 2011 : 20:19:40 Festus, is your server whitelisted or open?
I'm pretty addicted to Minecraft and play on a number of servers.
Oh and BTW, saw you were on the server today Fossil! Very different map, right? lol
We are running the server until Aug. now. |

Posted - Jul 05 2011 : 14:58:12 Havn't had a lot of time to play - still getting settled into the new home. Will attempt to jump on the server soon. |

Posted - Jul 05 2011 : 11:55:08 Beware that game is very addictive! I don't know if bloody still has his server up but he had a ton of awesome builds. See if you can't get him to let you on before he closes it down

Posted - Jul 05 2011 : 10:02:28 A couple of my TB buds and I started Minecrafting a few weeks ago.
I had built this AWESOME underground, inverted Glass Pyramid. It was about 40-50 cubes per side to start and I worked it down to it's apex, hollowing out everything below to initial level to that same 70x70 dimension. You could see caverns, waterfalls, lava, monsters, etc thru it.
Unfortunately a backup failed and we lost it all and I didn't have the heart to start again from an earlier backup. I did get pics tho!

Here was my upstairs "patio".

And finally, here was my personalized Address at the front door:

We ended up starting a new world, and I've gone the "Rogue Explorer/Magellon" route this time. Built a decent base, and now I strike out randomly, marking my trail as I go. Sometimes I get very, very lost, especially if I build a portal to the Nether and travel that way.
I usually find my way back through dead reckoning via my markers or using a map that we generate of the world regularly.
Anyone else have trouble finding CLAY? I finally started finding lots of it by travelling sandy beachs and keeping my eyes open.

Posted - Jul 05 2011 : 06:20:27 Update:
I had a month credit on my account (they switched owners and think it was due to that), so I applied it to July. This means we have the server for one more month now. |

Posted - Jul 03 2011 : 21:55:04 Worst I have seen to date is what good old mum did with lava on our server. She had super admin powers (at the time at least) and wanted to put down a small line of lava for a project. Well, she must have left clicked somewhere way across the map then right clicked on her side of the map and did the //set lava command. Well, she actually called me on the phone and said "OMG I have ruined the server". I was like "what?". She said she had put a little lava down and it had gone everywhere. I log in to find lava from our city all the way through the subway system and into Fossilville. She single handedly destroyed nearly every creation we had all done for a month.
Thank goodness for backups to the map. We ended up loosing about 3-4 days worth of creations, but better than the whole damn thing. lol |

Posted - Jul 03 2011 : 21:27:06 This video is what originally peaked my interest in Minecraft. I figured any game that allowed you to mess up like that was worth playing. |

Posted - Jul 03 2011 : 08:26:16 LOL
We noticed right before we took the old map down that someone had burned up a bit of your one house Fossil. Not sure if it was lighting or someone set it a blaze. Looked like most of it was still ok though. |

Posted - Jul 03 2011 : 07:27:19 It's fun, I played it quite a bit with my kids and nephew, we had so many accidents it was pretty comical. When my nephew first came on the server I told him NOT to destroy anything. First thing he does is cause a MASSIVE forest fire that burned for 2 days! |

Posted - Jul 02 2011 : 09:24:08 Server is now running the 1.7 patch and crazy new map.
Also, if anyone is using my texture pack I referenced earlier in this thread, I have updated it for 1.7 and added missing textures. and remember you must run the latest MCPatcher to use high res textures like this.

Posted - Jun 30 2011 : 21:22:40 Update:
Most likely going to be shutting down the server in the next couple weeks. Very low traffic now a days and doesn't make mush since to pay the $20 a month now.
A few of us from the server are playing some at timgaming.com now. It's a fun server with a full economy, mobs, and protections (purchase land/lots and then protected from griefers). If you try it out, be warned, you really need to go to timgaming.com and read the beginner guide before playing on the server. |

Posted - Jun 08 2011 : 11:55:15 It can, depending on the amount of player slots you want.
The biggest issue is always dedicated ram for Minecraft to use. We have just a 10-12 slot server and we use just over 1 gb.
I play on a "competitive / active economy" server that has 45 slots and it has to be scheduled to restart every hour and do a map save every 15 min. It also gets a bit laggy at times when at the full 45 slots.
On the flip side, I was running a small server for about 4-6 people off my own PC for a while and it wasn't laggy, but used lots of bandwidth.
I think in the long run, if your gonna run a MC server, your always best to find a good hosting company that specializes in MC. With constant updates, mods, etc. in MC, it takes a good host and an even better head admin. |
