Posted - Jul 11 2011 : 10:44:39 I am surprised that nobody has found and posted about this game already. Been playing it for about a week now and it is not only a great game but its free to play! Unlike a lot of free to play games it does not force you into a corner if you do not pay. Much like the CoH FTP game that Relic put out. You advance a little slower and have a few less bennies but its no big deal if you do not pay. It is only 1.8g to download so you dont have to wait hours to play it.
The game itself is a class A quality shooter with good graphics that works almost like a full on tank sim. The game has quite a few well thought out maps. Think around 10. It offers a lot of tanks to play with. Even many that never saw battle or did not even make it to the prototype stage. They have light, med, heavy, artillery and tank destroyers. On the back end there is a lot of advancement available from tank components (gun, engine, radio, turret and suspension) to custom add-ons and special crew skills. Latter they will be adding clan wars to it where clans will fight WWII on a campaign map.
There is a learning curve for tactics and style of play as matches tend towards strategy and teamwork. Twitch skill is still there but less than in a FPS. The learning curve for just getting in and shooting someone in the face is not much at all. There is a practice mode but I do not recommend it since ppl just tend to mess around and not really play. There are no standings or ladder to worry about so ranked matches are fine to start off with. Ammo and tank repairs cost in-game money but you will get enough to cover that (with few exceptions) from the match rewards even if you loose.
It only takes the match maker a few seconds to find a match. So no staring at "looking for match" for 10 min like some games. There are no respawns so if you die your out of the match. The good news is there is no penalty for leaving the match early and starting another one. The tank you used will be locked in that battle till it is over but you get up to 5 tank slots for free and can add more if you pay. You can also watch the match and see how it plays out.
The tanks are divided into tiers and there is matchmaking that tries to keep you somewhat in range of the other tanks. This works well up to a point. In the first 2 tiers it works great. Almost every game you play will be tier 1 and 2 only. However you will spend a long time in tier 3 and 4 being totally outmatched in most games. This is not all bad though because you can still be useful as a scout and get rewards for it as well. If you can sneak in and take out a arty or two your team will love you. You can avoid this somewhat by playing tank destroyers and arty since they can still hurt big tanks. Unlocking med and heavy tanks tends to be a bit more of a uphill struggle.
I am playing as Voidbeast and would love to play some games with any of you that want to try it out. Knowing the kinds of games you guys like this one should be a blast for most all of you.
Advice for new players
If you are going to stay with free to play you should prob not try to play all three nations. Focus on one or two. I play mainly German except my tank destroyer is US because some of the latter US ones get a rotating turret instead of front fire only.
keep a few lower tier tanks around for quick cash. You get rewards for "spotting" the enemy. So you can jump in a fast tank and charge their base right at the start. Get a few shots off, die and go jump in another tank. The tier 2 US M2 light tank and the German 35(t) are great for this. I like the 38(t) better even though its slower and has less side armor. It has slightly more HP, better front armor and a more accurate gun. It is better for sniping if you want to play the match out.
If your playing light tanks in tier 3 and think you wont be so outmatched in tier 4 think again. They up the stakes once more and you will end up in most games full of top tier tanks. Not every game is like that but a lot are. In those I either try to sneak past their lines and take out arty or suicide scout depending on map. When you do find yourself in a game where you are at the top sit back and enjoy the carnage.
Atry is in a class by itself. It plays totally different than everything else. It can shoot about half way across most maps and can penetrate almost any armor even at tier 2. It can direct fire (hard to do) but is built for sniper mode. For sniper mode HIT SHIFT!!! I did not know this when I started and found arty hard as hell to play with. Once I figured that out it was a lot of fun. Can get frustrating sometimes if the map has a lot of big hills or nobody bothers to protect the base from those pesky little knats that like to suicide into you. Also the ammo is quite limited and very expensive. This is one case where you may actually loose money in a match so be careful. Make every shot count.
Do not assume bigger is better. This goes for both guns and tanks. Penetration and damage are the biggest two factors when looking at guns. Some of the large guns do tons of damage but can only penetrate light armor. All tanks are not made equal. For example the US has a tier 2 med tank that has less armor than most light tanks. The gun isn't any better either. The Pz III med tank only has slightly better armor than same tier light tanks and also uses the same gun.
Take a careful look at the tech trees. The arrows that go sideways to other lines are shortcut paths. You do not have to go both directions to get into a tank. Either path will get you there. Looking ahead and planning your path well will save you a lot of time.

Posted - Aug 13 2011 : 13:03:11 Hey guys. just got my T-29 last night....much more to grind as im playing all lines equally. tier 6 with all countries, just moved to 7 with American line...I got Petri to start playing with me and in 2 sessions hes moved to tier 3 smoothly and quickly. And with the last update... http://www.youtube.com/user/WorldOfTanksCom#p/u/3/FcI7JsWGYl0
Includes new tanks which are very powerful post WW2 designs Germany had on the drawing table as we defeated them. Good thing we did when we did! It would have took a nuke to stop Hitler too if they had mass produced them along with jet aircraft! Come Play!.....btw...World of Warplanes is next!
PS.... I was the first to post about WoT as well as BF1942, Project Torqe and others...but always have limited participation till later....but i try..
WoT platoons can only have 3 members in game...but it eliminates tier 10 stacking of undefeatable tanks. Also there is an option to band together with 15 players and attempt world domination...but i have to eat sleep and work so thats not an option even though i like the idea of it.
Find me if your starting out...I love playing the little guys, tier 1 thru 3 as well as my 4 thru 7 tanks....after 7 some guns cost 1000 per shot but pay over 1500 per hit so you see the point of tactical improvement affecting your finances in game. Platoon for 2 players is now free as well which im a big fan of. 3 player platoons require a premium account..
Med1cated is the name and you can start several platoons at the same time using TS as a count down tool and about 70% of the time play against or together at the whim of the system matchmaker. You also can start a 15 player platoon to WAIT for a challenge from another group of 15...Yes im trolling for more players so i hope to see several old friends SOON!
This is a clan reuniting game if given the correct start by playing and developing as a group. So...i have 13 tanks lvl 1 thru 7 and im back to the grind...See ya.

Posted - Jul 23 2011 : 12:22:43 Hey, been playing since late in the Beta and am up to driving an IS-3, Tiger (qualified, but not bought), T-29, and VK3002DB. I won't mention the Hummel as it was driving me nuts.
Loving the game and it is a lot of fun with fast rounds and nice graphics/mechanics in the game. Not real keen on the russian devs that overpowered the russkie tanks a bit, but am learning the benefits of much better optics in the german tanks.
My in-game name is VonRidel if anyone is on, look me up. |

Posted - Jul 17 2011 : 20:52:38 Hmm... Thought I had mentioned WoT here. Anyway, been playing since early in the beta. Love the game, but it does get "grindy" at times worlking for the tank upgrades. Haven't spent a dime on the game. Currently running a T-20 in the US line, a Pz4 in the German, and a T-34-85 in the Russian.
Playing as moakden currently.

Posted - Jul 12 2011 : 02:38:16 Maybe it was at some point but it is not now. The paid for tanks are a little better but not so much so as to be dominant. The devs have reported that most of the money spent has been for things that do not affect gameplay. Like expanding your garage or faster training for your crew. I have run into a few "gold" tanks and had no problem killing them. They also tend to get targeted first.
If you want a game 100% fair then this is not for you. But that is not because of the 'gold" tanks. It is because matches tend to have tanks from up to 5 tiers in it. So unless you are driving a top-tier tank there will always be something on the field that will outclass you. Even if you are in a top-tier tank there will be tanks that still have a advantage over you because of the tank classes. Heavy tanks beat med. Tank destroyers beat heavy. Med tanks beat tank destroyers. Arty beats everything but light tanks. Light tanks give a team advantage.
How you play is more important that what you drive. I have been the team hero with a light tank when most of tanks in the match where heavy. Nothing ruins a heavy tanks day more than some light buzzing by damaging his treads right before a artillery barrage comes in on him. I have also been nothing more than a single use shell absorber. I would not call it a perfectly balanced game but its not so unbalanced as to not be a lot of fun. |

Posted - Jul 11 2011 : 21:22:06 I tried it and found it was like most co called "FREE TO PLAY" games and if you don't spend "real money" for upgrades it's actually a "FREE TO DIE" GAME. |
