Scal wise its bigger than HW. The pace of the game is slower than HW. The team concept involves sharring a star base and working together out of one spot. You can share resorces and research. The team concept is pretty cool. You still have the early fighter rush, but its managable. Resorces move in an asteriod belt clockwise. So they are forever moving toward you and away from you making gaurding the buggers the trick. You gain manpower from the mines. Interesting game.

Peace

When you talk about the pace of the game, how does it compare to my old benchmark of Homeworld?

I do like the slower games. . . the larger maps in HW where great fun.

What's the scale like?

I'm noy sure if it's out in the UK yet, I'll check. . .

ORB MP a view to a kill:

After playing Aged last night there are some things that have become obvious to me. Like in chess there are a couple of opening moves that are absolutely required. The first move is to upgrade to upgrade your fighters from the basic chassis. The second is to build 10 - 20 and get them over to interdict your enemy.

There are problems with this tactic in that it will leave you wide open on your own home front because it is virtually impossible to have more than 20 fighters early in the game and still produce enough freighters to get your resource production moving.

This game can be very fighter rush oriented in the first opening moves. The figher rush can be countered with the same tactic in defence. So I would suspect that everyone will be doing it... or getting killed in the first few minutes. If you loose your first mine before you have established the 2nd... you are toast.

Which brings me to my 2nd move. Establish your 2nd mine as soon as possible. I do so right after I have my 20 mod lvl 1 fighers (the 1st chassis, II model). Most of the resource 'roid are really far away (after the first) so getting that mine active is really important.

From there on it is really a risk assessment. I went for broke researching Cap ships to the total exclusion of fighter research. Very big gamble because Aged had Interceptors before I had Destroyers. If he would have moved on my territory I would not have had a response and would have lost significant assets.

Once I had my Destroyers the game was basically over. I was ahead of Aged in Cap ship production and was in control of his territory. If I would have drove into his starbase it would have been game over. As it was I wanted to get my Assault Carrier: H and Destroyer: H created so I pulled back.

Given the path that Aged researched I would have went with Intercepter: T chassis. The torp fighters are great against Destroyers but only in high numbers.

I don't know how valid these observations will be after the MP game matures. There are many variables in setup that can change all of this... well except the initial fighter rush which if countered really just turns into your first engagement.

I don't know if you knew this, but when you destroyed that mine base, my other one had just gone empty. Destroying it when you did, took my only source of RU's along with (and this is the worst part) put me at -10 manpower. So, I had one destroyer, another two in the hopper, ~1000 RU's and negative manpower.

So, what to do? Retire the Destroyer and leave myself defenseless against what I knew was at least 2 destroyers? Retire the freigthers to generate manpower for the destroyers? Convert the old mine base to a repair base and generate 5 people?

As you see, I was basically doomed if you had anything beyond those 2 destroyers. So, I upgraded the mine base, retired the freigthers and finished the 2 destroyers and went for broke. That left me with only 250 RU's - not enough to rebuild the mine base.

So, out come the 2 new destroyers and I went for broke. Unfortunately, Arcane had an assault carrier and another destoryer by his star base - game over (actually, not for quite awhile, but in reality it was over when that mine base got killed).

So, my initial impressions:

The net code is horrible - having to try 3 times to get 1 game in is ridiculous. The save game feature didn't seem to work either.

I don't mind the pace, but when you get a death blow like I had, it's kind of boring.

Given the high cost (IMO) of mine bases, death blows are too easy. Lose a mine base with less than 1000 RU's and 5 people (I think) in the bank and you're pretty much dead.

Unfortunately, I think the game still has another patch for stability to go before any balance issues will even be looked at.

I still want to like this game, but MP isn't as entertaining as I'd hoped. Of course, losing to Arcane (of all people) didn't help matters much.

Well... it wasn't a total bust. Aged and I showed up. Even managed to complete a 1:1. It wasn't without problems though. We had sync failures about 15 - 20 minutes into the first 3 or 4 trys that broke the session. The last one went without any sync errors at all (that I noticed).

Watch out for Aged... I wouldn't want to play poker with him.
