Earlier this year I went on an RTS buying spree. I posted a quick review of 2 of them (Northgard & Forts). I'll freely admit I'd hoped doing so might've generated some interest and spark some MP action.

I'd planned on posting review of Ashes of the Singularity : Escalation (the 3rd game of my spree). That's on hold for a bit. (Quickly, it's a game reminiscent of Supreme Commander & Total Annihilation.)

So, why is the third one on hold?

A while back I was chatting with Blue on Steam and he was telling me about how he's been playing Hearts of Iron III. It sounded interesting and he sure sounded enthusiastic about it.

I checked into it and saw that there was a newer version out (Hearts of Iron IV), so I put it on my wishlist.

A week or two ago I got an email that an item on my wishlist was on sale. (Thank you, Steam. I really need more games to splurge on...). The price was too good to pass up - something like 75% off. So, I got it.

HOI4 may be the most complex game I've ever played. Somehow that's the appeal. I'm only scratching the surface of all the game has to offer, but I'm addicted. It' may be a while before I feel like I've really got a handle on it, but I'm enjoying it.

The game is a grand strategy (think Europa Universalis) WWII game. You pick a country to play as and start making decisions to build your economy and your forces (land, sea & air). Picking a major country (i.e., UK, USA, Germany, Italy, etc.) gives you lots of specific options tailored to your country. You can also play as another country (i.e., Portugal, Tibet, etc.), but your options are generic and you start with fairly low military resources. Playing as a minor country seems to lack flavor in SP, but maybe I need to give it more time.

You can change history.

Oh, and by the way, there's MP as well. The games will likely last a while,but from what I've seen (via YouTube), the time passes quickly because there's a lot going on. You can play coop too (even as a team in a bigger game).

As I said, so far, I'm loving it and it keeps me thinking constantly. Blue got me hooked.

I'm playing as Italy and have created my own faction - Novus Imperium Romanum.

I have Italy, Yugoslavia, Greece, Libya, Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia. Turkey and Bulgaria are members. I have my eyes on Iraq and Iran.

After that, I'm not sure what to do. Germany has pretty much kicked the USSR's ass. I need steel, but anywhere I can get it are either allied with the Axis or the Allies. From past experience, bringing the UK into a war with me hurts. How may freaking planes do they have in Malta anyway???

Yeah, it's fun. I'm finding I have to intentionally avoid the game sometimes or I get drawn back into addiction.
