Howdy Fellers!
Is anyone using Shorewall for Linux as their firewall? I am having a devil of a time trying to get it working with Directplay (i.e. MW4 et. al.) . I freely admit my ignorance, I have only a nodding acquaintance with Linux though I am in the process of learning. If this is too much of a bother, I understand. Any help would be appreciated. I can give more details upon request, I don’t want to post a bunch of muck on your board without your permission.

Many thanks,
Kentuck

I'm a bit behind the curve here but...
I went to Best Buy in December and lo and behold they had a whole raft of Homeworld and Cataclysm packages for $10.00 each so I broke down and bought one of each... Haven't really gotten the hang of either yet but I *really* like Homeworld. Considering that I jumped into the 'tracks' of the bandwagon nearly 4 years after it went by... well. Still a very nice looking game. Gotta get this firewall thing figured out. All this speed and nowhere to go..

I know. I saw your screen shot of your interface awhile back.
Aged Posted - Feb 19 2003 : 17:34:53
I check what I did when I get home (and if I remember to ). You must have a newer router than me. I don't have TCP UDP stuff in my setup, only triggers and ports.
Petrified-OMO Posted - Feb 19 2003 : 17:28:52
Don't know how to work with them. I understand the concept - it's an address, but I don't know where to put the address. I figure it must be under network settings, and once I find the right place all I have to do is put the same IP into the SMC setup... aaieee...

Plus, the SMC advanced setup has a limit of 10 slots for the firewall ports and they are either TCP or UDP... which means I may have to double up the port listings.
Aged Posted - Feb 19 2003 : 15:39:19
What's the problem you've been having with static LAN IPs?
Petrified-OMO Posted - Feb 19 2003 : 15:15:35
I have been trying to set up my comp with a static address so I can use the DMZ on the router. However, the help SMC provides from the help menu is weak and their online support is, lacking. I think I know what my next class will be: Networking.
Aged Posted - Feb 19 2003 : 15:11:44
I didn't have to do anything at all on the PC side to play the game. I have since set up the PC's with static LAN IP addresses in order to use the port forwarding and DMZ functions. Actually, that's how I got the older PC to work as a web server. I forward a port (other than 80 since my ISP blocks that one) through to router to the static IP address for the older PC. Then, I set up the webserver software (Apache, but works with IIS too thanks Arcane) to watch that port. I also editted my zone information to send requests to my domain name to my web IP address (which tends to stay static since I have my router set up to renew the lease indefinately) along with the correct port.

I haven't tried using the DMZ yet (or the DirectX settings) yet to host a MW4 game, but I'm pretty confident it would work.

I keep being very tempted to pick up a newer lap top for the sheer heck of being able to game on it. But I can't justify it in my mind unless I kill my current PII 366. I can at least play some games on it (HomeWorld and non-graphics intensive games (the ATI card sucks in this laptop). I think I can squeeze MOO3 onto this too, but I plan to get a larger HD than my current 6gig.

I have been having a bear of a time with my harware router. I can't really play online games with it... even with it's firewall down. So I am wondering if I am messing up somewhere. Maybe I am. Aged? We have the same maker for our Router, anything on your PC side that you had to do make it cozy with the SMC? To play online I have to pull the cable from my router and plug it into the DSL modem. Annoying, especially when I try to get a server up and running in the next few months.
Kentuck Posted - Feb 19 2003 : 14:42:30
Thanks Confused! I'm still working on it and will give it all a try.

BTW... No Petri' I run my Firewall/Router on a multihomed PII 333 system. Its only job is to act as a firewall. I finally got RoadRunner a few weeks ago so I got rid of my ISDN connection. While I could get away with a simple packet filter using ISDN I wanted something more robust for Cablemodem. For the trouble that I am having, I might just break down and buy a PIX. I play MW on a Toshiba Laptop with a GEForce440 go and XP.

I tried this and it works but then again I am not using linux as my firewall.

Taken from the microsoft site and surprise surprise it works

SUMMARY
This article describes the ports required to play Microsoft DirectX multiplayer games through a firewall, a proxy server, a router, Network Address Translation (NAT), or Intenet Connection Sharing (ICS).
MORE INFORMATION
To verify that these ports are open or to open these ports, please contact your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).

If you are the administrator of the network, please consult the documentation provided with your networking software to determine the steps to open these ports.

To play DirectX games through a network firewall or proxy server, the following requirements must be met:
To ensure DirectPlay compatibility, the latest version of DirectX should be installed on the computers used by all players who participate in the game.

The following TCP and UDP ports must be open on the firewall or proxy server:

Using DirectX 7 method:
Connection Ports for Client Configuration Ports for Host Configuration
Initial TCP Connection 47624 Outbound 47624 Inbound
Subsequent TCP Inbound 2300-2400 2300-2400
Subsequent TCP Outbound 2300-2400 2300-2400
Subsequent UDP Inbound 2300-2400 2300-2400
Subsequent UDP Outbound 2300-2400 2300-2400

Using DirectX 8 method:
Connection Ports for Client Configuration Ports for Host Configuration
Initial UDP Connection 6073 Outbound 6073 Inbound
Subsequent UDP Inbound 2302-2400 2302-2400
Subsequent UDP Outbound 2302-2400 2302-2400

To determine the DirectPlay method for games that utilize the DirectPlay Lobby service, follow these steps:
On the Windows Start menu, click Run.
In the Open box, type dxdiag, and then click OK.
Click the Save All Information button to save a Dxdiag.txt report.
Click Desktop, and then click Save.
Open the DxDiag.txt file on your desktop and find the section marked DirectPlay Lobbyable Apps. Note that each game listed here will report either "(DX7)" or "(DX8)" which corresponds to its DirectPlay connection method.

NOTE: DirectPlay8 games can work with the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) capabilities of Windows XP. When the game begins hosting, enumerating, or connecting, the appropriate ports will automatically open and when the game shuts down, these ports will automatically close.
Additionally, Windows Me ICS, Windows XP ICS, and UPnP-compliant NATs cooperate with DirectPlay8 to make it possible to run full-featured, DirectPlay8 sessions through the NAT. Users can host or join DirectPlay8 sessions that are hosted inside or outside the NAT. No special configuration is required.

If you are using UPnP compliant network devices and are having difficulty, please check the following.

When you use Windows XP, make sure that you log on as an administrator.

If you use a hardware NAT, contact the manufacturer to see if the hardware is UPnP-compliant or if there are any updates for it, if it is not.

When you use Windows XP ICS, make sure that the Allow other network users to control or disable the shared Internet connection and the Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet check boxes are selected in the shared network device's properties.

A client on a Windows Me ICS machine must join the session before any client behind the NAT joins the session or else the ICS machine will not be able to join.

I also found this in my travels trying to configure my firewall.

It might help

Ahh, You play MW4 on Linux? Really?! How?
Arcane Posted - Feb 15 2003 : 14:44:07
I moved it to Mercs that might be why you haven't seen it on the Zone.
Kentuck Posted - Feb 15 2003 : 13:07:11
Thanks for your time guys! I'll keep plinkin' away at it. These things just take time... See you online. BTW... why can't I see your Win2K server in zone match? I used to see it months ago but I haven't been able to see it since I re-gained interest in the game recently.
Aged Posted - Feb 15 2003 : 12:47:32
I'm sorry. I don't know anything about it. I use a hardware router and firewall ... and I don't even have any Linux installations up at all these days. You might try asking over at www.linuxnewbie.org (has a new name now, but it should still redirect).
Arcane Posted - Feb 15 2003 : 12:13:53
Hey Kentuck,

I surely can't answer your question but maybe a feller by the name of Aged can since he has some experience with Linux and Firewalls.

As far as "posting a bunch of muck on your boards"... ah... most everything we post here is muck so feel free to join in
