Anyone know how to do them? I made one, put it into the /cuetom/textures/customdecals folder like it said - but when i try to set it in the game, it doesn't show up.

I'm trying to make an OMO decal...

Here's a quick "down and dirty" for you then Eccentric using PSP (6.0 for me). I'll probably start back a bit further than I need to, but better safe than sorry.

Once you're ready to add the Alpha, go to the Mask drop down on the tool bar and choose "New" and "From Image". You should get a dialog box asking for the source and it'll default to "This Window". Just make sure that "Source Luminance" is ticked on the radio buttons and hit OK.

With that done, go up and choose the Masks menu again. Select "View Mask" from the drop down, and then also select "Edit Mask". With that done select the Magic Wand tool and click the areas you want to make transparant (hold down Shift and select for non continuous regions). Once you've done that go to the Selections menu and choose "Invert".

Remember that with masks, Black is transparant (0R 0G 0B), and that White is Opaque (255R, 255G, 255B), so if the area you are wanting to be transparant IS NOT black, it WILL show up on your decal.

To continue, after inverting your selection, choose the paintbrush tool and paint away. Same goes here with coloring. White is opaque and black is transparant. You want a color close to white, but not entirely, or the decal doesn't look natural. I usually paint with the Red/Green/Blue settings at about 225 each. You also don't have to worry about going over the "line" because all you are painting is what is inside the blinking line.

Once you've done all that, go back to the Mask menu and choose "Save to Alpha". Doesn't matter what you call it, I just go with the default. Once you've done that, then save it off as a 24-bit .tga and you're good to go as long as it's under 5k.

Hope this helps out a bit.

The real problem I had, Obake, was getting the alpha channel thing to work - I got a decal or 2 to work - but could never get it to be "transparent."

Hi guys!

If you're using PSP, then they're pretty easy. The hardest part is keeping it under 5k with a transparancy at 64x64.

The trick is to limit the number of colors, and remove stray pixels. With a little bit of work you should have no problem getting virtually anything as a transparant decal at 64x64, and they look a lot better than the 32x32.

If any of you are oldtime tabletop BT fans, TeamBanzai is hosting a decal pack that I did which included 100+ Battletech unit logo's that I converted for the game.

Aged, check your E-mail!

Heya Eccentric.

I had a lot of trouble trying to get the patches I made to show up too.
In the end I opened up someone elses custom patch from the custom decals folder. Pasted mine straight over the top, left the file name the same, put it back into the folder and for some reason it then showed up.

I've got both PSP and Photoshop 7.

Usually I'm not a slouch with graphics (certainly nothing hot, but not bad) - but this really, totally kicked my @$$
Aged Posted - May 18 2003 : 16:14:20
Just my opinion but it's simpler to do in Paint Shop Pro. I've never actually made one in Photoshop.

It takes some practice and patience. The tutorial that Aged posted is pretty good though. I'll see if I have another one (I remember saving one somewhere). It also helps to have PhotoShop or Paint Shop Pro as they have the proper tools to perform the needed actions (alpha transparency for one)

I tried messing with it for quite a while - no matter what I did, i couldn't ge the masking corectly.

i did actually get one that went onto the mech - but despite the attempts at masking, I still had a big solid square behind it :(

It has to be a .tga file and it has to be less than 5 K. Here's a guide about how to make them.

And, here's some OMO decals from V/BK.

CanadianBiB Posted - May 18 2003 : 13:44:17
The file must be a .tga file... and don't forget to enable custom decals. ;)
I have a friend who made a decal for everyone in WoR, so I'll ask him about it and get back to you...
