Posted - Jul 21 2004 : 11:51:37 One of the fun things about City of Heros is that you can create replayable demos of the game. However, without the CoH client, they have to be converted to a video format so that non-CoH players can view them. The actual viewing of the demo in the client is not the simplest thing, but is a goal they have to eventually make it easier.
Anyways, the demo itself comes in the form of a text file which essentially breaks down to a packet log. (5 minutes equates to about 400kb of text and I have some demos over 2 megs).
I had promised to put something out, so I did. Hopefully BackPain will forgive me for this snippit since, well... it WAS his mistake.
The video is in two forms, a .zip file and a htlm link to the uncompressed flash file. The video quality stinks, but then, it was 2am when I decided sleep was in my best interest. I need to play around with the formats to get a higher quality video with better compression. I am thinking of playing around with the DivX codecs or using .jpg pics instead of .tga pics that get dumped by the demo. We shall see. There is no sound since, again, it was late and I didn't feel like scoring at 2AM.
Using Swish's beta software: Mistakes ~9megs Download the ZIP file: Mistakes ~8megs |

Posted - Jul 23 2004 : 06:42:55 Yeah that Pacemaker fights DIRTY.
Every time he rushes in there and kicks some poor villian in the nuts.
I mean, I know they are Evil, but hey......

Posted - Jul 22 2004 : 20:43:11 Radke comes running into the area dumb as a level 2 rock. Looks around, sees some guys who look a lot like tanks, you know, the superhero kind of tanks, doesn't even cross his mind that none of those tank like superheroes are part of his group. Doesn't use Tab to cycle through targets. "Hey." He thinks, "There's my superhero buddies." Runs over to join them. "Hmmm." Brain cells start to spark. "These aren't..." Radke picks himself off ground and watches his health plummet with big red numbers floating above his head. "...oh shit!"
And the rest is history. This moment is telling evidence why most superheroes don't have sidekicks. Because the goofs always get themselves killed.
Oh, btw, thanks Petri, for selecting such a flattering depiction of my superhero prowess. I got your back. |

Posted - Jul 21 2004 : 20:59:03 Hey, I'm a HERO!!!!
Actually my BFG saved everyones bacon many times. Alltho I have to admit that for teams to win against the badguys in this game, every team needs the right composition to make it work. Tanker (meatshield), Blaster (long range shooter like My guy), Defender (BPs guy, helps boost defense), and a controller (can inhibit enemies and aid partners) all have a role.
If a team is lacking anyone of these they can get SMOKED.

Posted - Jul 21 2004 : 12:02:16 Commentary:
Radkey is Back Pain. He is the short green fellow who... well... pulls a Festus ElClown is Pacemaker, the firey fellow. The more conservative of the 4 of us. Dark Grifter, who appears from the right after the action heats up (he was firing that massive gun of his off screen), is Festus. He does not pull a Festus this time. Dark Fall, me, the one with no name floating above his head and centered.
A Festus: jumping into the middle of it without thought to the consequences.
I found a link that describes how to edit the text file correctly so that the video can be completely modified. This would be good since having the demo anchored on one player gets... well... old. Panning in game is not a smoth process and the change in perspective can lead to running into walls. I may re-release this with different camera positions and various edits to remove the floating numbers and add dialogue (everyone was talking on TS, I was just listening). Oh, and I'll score some music as well.
