 Need some help cleaning ad bug..

My daughter was on my comp the other day while I was at work.
Somehow she picked up a couple programs that out of nowhere a add from a website will popup.
I have updated and run my antivirus, c-cleaner- Ad-Aware, and Spybot. I also went into "remove programs" found a couple of them and removed them. However, I am guessing they are hiding out in my keys somewhere because even when I erase them or unload them, they pop back up.

What is the procedure for getting to my key area where I can search and delete the exe file? I remember you hit start and run, then I forgot what the command is.

If you have a registered version of windows XP there is Windows Live one care, it is free to try, worked for me.
Also if you have sys restore set up restore to a date prior to the installs.

Great advice guys. I spend a couple hours yesterday deleting a bunch of stuff. However, it still abounds. When I look at the different files I can't seem to determine what's suppose to be there vs. what's not. When I get home, I'll try what Foggy and Cack advised. Really pisses me off when that crap pops up. Like, is there anyone that would even consider buying from any of those popup ads considering you know that someone has planted a bug in your system to get them there? Oh, well. thanks for the advice. I'll let you know what happened. It may just be time for a complete comp cleaning.

Yes, what foggy said.

To disable system restore right-click "My Computer" and select properties. Go to the System Restore tab and check "Turn off System restore". Then click Apply and OK.

Reboot your computer and keep tapping the F8 key. (You can also start the computer in safe mode by typing in msconfig and checking /SAFEBOOT in the BOOT.ini tab in that dialog box. Be sure to uncheck it before you restart the computer to get it in Normal mode again.)

Once in safe mode, only essential threads and processes are run. Do your virus scan, ad-aware and spybot scans to remove it. This way you should be able to completely remove them (unless they are using a rootkit, which is a whole other story... and much pain to remove.)

Also visit Symantec.com and type in the adware there, they tend to have detailed instructions on how to remove these malicious buggers.

Lot of good points by others already so I'll just add a quick note. Some of those buggers are designed for virus-like behaviour. This means two things:
1. when installed for the first time they create a restore point
2. make safe copy of the main install file under different name somewhere in your system folder

To get rid of them you need to disable system restore, boot XP into safe mode and then remove/delete.
This however is no guarantee that the bugger is actually removed. For complete removal you have to know exact name of the program. Which sometimes can be quite tricky.

I'm using XoftSpy and IMO it is much better than AdWare and SpyBot I was using in the past. It is commercial program and you have to buy it but free evaluation version is available as well. This version will not remove the threat but you will at least know what you are dealing with. Go to www.xoftspy.com where you can download free scanner or run free on-line scan of your computer.

Also type in msconfig in the run box. There you can unload some needless programs and free up some RAM.

You can check the run list in you registry but going to: Run, regedit. Then go down the tree to HKey Local Machine, Software, Microsoft, Windows, Current Version, Run. This is the list of programs that run when you start windows. This is where most adware and other malicious programs get put.

The problem is I've seen programs you delete but keep adding themselves back. You can also go to C:Program Files and look for suspicious programs. This is what the majority of the repairs I do involves and I have seen some that take days to find all the hidden stuff.

When you go into Add Remove programs make sure there isn't anything that adds tool bars/search bars to your IE. The Google is the only one I trust and use. I do have a few programs that you can get from the actual site that puts that stuff on your pc to remove their program. Some common names are Hot bar, Lop, My Web Search, Home Search Assistant(HSA), Look to me, The Best Offers, etc.
