Posted - Jun 14 2006 : 14:22:31 After almost 7 years of faithful service, my KDS 19" gave up the ghost yesterday. I came home and fired up the comp and got nothing from my old buddy. I am on a borrowed 15", and that is a close approximation of hell for me.
Guide me O Wise Ones! Where is the best site to get a decent 19" at a low price? I am ready to make the leap to flat panel if I can find one that won't break me.
If you don't have a site in mind, then any suggestions regarding brand and type of monitor would be welcome as well.
Help me before I go blind from squinting at this tiny thing.

Posted - Jun 15 2006 : 10:51:19 I love that phrase Blue "total immersion player" By that token, Older drowned long ago.
BTW Blue, having gone through the "excrutiating" flat panel LCD monitor selection already, I am resigned to the fact that nothing in the LCD realm will ever match the visual performance of a CRT or something similar (SED for sure). I am patiently waiting for the first offerings of SED monitors to become available. Until that time, no more LCD's for me.

Posted - Jun 15 2006 : 01:43:47 LCD 100%
My first LCD monitor was back in '99. Played Descent 3 on it and loved it. Yes, it had a lousy response time compared to modern LCDs, but it was much nicer to play on. While I like the coloring on CRTs a bit better, I think the difference now is pretty negligable. Also, since response times are better, ghosting is much less noticable - I really didn'y notice it back in '99. At least, for me, I was used to it and it seemed part of the atmosphere of the game.
The two LCDs I use now are good, under 20ms by RealSync (17" for ~$200). Cheap and effective. Ghosting is just not an issue on them. |

Posted - Jun 14 2006 : 19:16:56 Thanks for the input folks. I will look into the LCDs.
Hey Older. I have been so darn busy, that I haven't had the time to play BF2.(or Silent Hunter, or any other game I love) I have this weird personal thing that if I cannot play a game to my own personal standards, I don't play at all. I am a total immersion player I guess you would say. I would be an embarassment to OMO if I climbed into a chopper now. LOL I will try to get on in the next few weeks while my daughter is off visiting grandma. Maybe take my commander slot for a while to ease back in.
The only thing I have had time for lately is playing poker on pokerstars.com. If I hit one of the big tourneys hard and make enough to take some time off, then you can bet I will be gaming again. :)

Posted - Jun 14 2006 : 16:30:28 LCD all the way... Dell/Samsung make decent products. Besides being lighter by a huge amount, I like the picture better, it's easier on the eyes and it takes up less space. Find Fuddy's thread where he went through an excruciating selection process before his purchase.
BTW, you post when something is wrong...where are you. I miss my old chopper partner. I know you don't like the game as much as you thought you would, but no random sighting? Even Fuddy's wife plays now. |

I too wouldnt mind a flat panel and done some research on it.LCD outlast the others. Most of the others only have like a 2 year lifetime(although someone trying thier best to sell you one will tell you anything) All is just my opinion of course!
Not true anymore, hasn't been for a while actually. Last year or two most LCD's have quick enough refresh to play FPS without ghosting. Even most of you bargain LCD have refresh rates way faster then the 25ms minimum.
I love my 19" LG. For some reason they don't rate well and tend to be more $ then the rest, but when I compared monitors sitting side by side at the store, the LG had the best picture of them all.
Monitors are one of the few items I recommend people go to a store to buy, seeing them on in person will help with your buying decision. I actually went to buy a different brand/model (based on reviews I’d read), but when I saw it sitting next to the LG it looked like crap. Not to mention if you have a dead pixel (rare but happens) it will be much easier to replace.
I haven’t seen a CRT come close to the brightness, clarity, and crispness of my LCD
