Does anyone make movies on their PCs? It's something our school librarian wants to do using data from a camcorder and/or digital photos. Is there anyone that could make a recommendation for an economical video card that would be really good? I will be using an Asus A8N32 SLI deluxe mobo, AMD Athalon 64 FX-60 procssor if that helps determine the video card.

Here's the process BL:
Buy a TV card for computer:
Hauppauge: http://www.hauppauge.com/
ATI: http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonx1300/aiw2006pcie/index.html

They come with video capture software.

Plug VCR into TV Card, hit play on VCR, record the video to PC using capture software. It saves the video as mpeg usually. Import that mpeg into Movie Maker, edit, burn to DVD!

Voila again!

That's exactly what I've been doing. I use a Pinnacle PCI capture card and their Studio software. Prior to that I tried a less expensive USB capture device but noticed a reduction in frame rate.

Pinnacle may or may not be the way to go. I find it to be okay for capturing (occasional issues with dropped frames and A/V sync, but usually rectified by defragging and trying again), very good for editing, but not so great for DVD authoring. There is a well-documented issue with Pinnacle Studio just hanging during the DVD burning step which affects many users.

OK Boys, if you've got the old VCR tapes and you want to make DVDs, what's the process? Is that where Video In comes into play? I can see that once the librarian gets into this, she just may want to convert VCR tapes to DVD.

Video out comes in handy some times, iv'e loops it back thru the pc so ppl could view it like a channel instead of a web cam..lol i have had ppl ask how to do moves on Mortal Kombat so i would show them lol , it might not be for everyone, but does come in handy ;)i got the all in one ATI TV Tuner Card, wich includes the 3 color high Def out.Just wish i had the LCD Big Screen to use it on!!lol but my regular video card has the DVI out too lol guess i could have different monitors out..lol but that gets a bit comfuzing lol

Just to correct the misunderstanding. I have noted that many video cards do not have video-in which I though might be worthwhile to have. Indeed, modern video equipment has firewire, usb and various transferable storage media, but sometimes there is the need to input raw analogue video. I suppose that is where a dedicated video capture card is required?

Not sure why you'd want video out unless you want to put the movies on VCR tapes!

You capture the video via the camera to Firewire or USB typically. You edit the raw footage via a movie making software adding music and other enhancements as necessary. Then you write that new movie out to DVD using a DVD burning drive (@$30 now a days) and burning software like Nero, Roxio, or even the movie making software sometimes has burning software built in.


Voila, you're a movie producer!

nice machine btw, i have the same cpu.
in a differant pc i have an All-In-Wonder 9700pro (ATI).
at the time, i could capture directly from the cable TV,
it had a built in tuner. it's an AGP card, don't know how the
new A-I-W cards are now...

anyways, my wife has an Adaptec card, it's PCI, called
Vide-Oh. she takes a mobile dvd player or TV or camcorder
and through RCA jacks captures video. don't know which
program she edits with, i use adobe premier on the pc with
the all in wonder, i think it's Pinnacle Studio. Then uses
Nero to burn DVD. I found Panman's site very helpful back
when i was into video editing, thier tutorials are spot on.

Thanks guys, I will share that info with my librarian. When I talked to Fuddy about what video card he suggested, he thought I should make sure I could output to another device but he didn't know for sure if that was something typically done. We've not gotten into movie making on PCs so it's a grey area for us. Is there a reason one would want video out? If so, what's the feature I'm looking for? Like I said, this is a grey area for me.

Your situation sounds sort of similar to mine. I have a boatload of VHS-C tapes which I am in the process of making into DVD's. The video card isn't really the bottleneck; I think the only thing that would affect would be previewing during capture (which I disable).

What matters the most is having a dedicated drive for your captured movies. This is mainly so you can ensure that the drive is not fragmented when you start your capture... more often than not this will introduce audio/video sync issues and/or dropped frames.

My daughter uses the Windows Movie Maker alot and the work comes out good. Fairly easy learning curve. The only thing is make sure she has enough hard drive because when you load a few minutes, then you start the cut and paste and copy process, you can run out of room real quick.

Your mobo has a Firewire port that should connect directly to your camera or the camera might support USB. Digital photos are then just copied to your PC and viewed easily. Movies are usually mpegs files that can be viewed my Windows Media player.

Now, if you want to edit them, well that's a whole huge thread. I've used many programs, but the web site above has a wealth of information for that. Microsoft Movie Maker may be enough for you.

As for video cards, any decent card will work: NVIDIA 7 series (7600, 7800, 7900) or equivalent ATI.

I had a bunch of VCR movies so I needed to hook up a VCR to my PC through a TV card but today's cameras are much easier to hook up.
