Hey guys - a friend of my wife had her hard drive fail. It is an older, garden-variety 120G IDE. I'm trying to help her figure out where to go for data recovery and how much she should expect to pay. There are so many places that do this that I don't' know who is legit and who isn't. Any advice you have would be much appreciated!

It makes a clicking noise and when the hard drive is attached, the comp won't even boot up...I'll try the freezer thing..

how long ago did it fail? How did it fail?
click of death (makes clicking noises when the computer starts up)
bad sectors (BIOS recognizes the drive but it doesn't go anywhere)
disk fracture (sounds like loose parts inside like Skidi's drive)
stuck heads (when you twist the drive, you can't hear the reader arm move)
None of the above =x

one of our field techs here found out that if you put the drive in the freezer for about 3 hrs then put it back in the comp, you may have enough time to get the important data off of the drive.

I had that issue when I shipped my computer to Hawaii a couple years ago. The only problem is I couldn't get anyone to do anything with it. We tried attaching an external case to it but it didn't work. I had one of the guys look at it and he said it couldn't be done. Wish I could get it back, I have about 50 hours of film on it of the kids and music/music videos by the thousands..So, it just sits under my desk here and hope someday they can figure it out..

I would talk to geeks in your area, the costs here run from 100 to about 250-300 depending on the guys thought of how good he is. I think they pull the discs out of the dead drive, and load them into a working shell, then recover the data to a second drive. But I have never had that problem, when my drive crashed it literally crashed and there was pieces of disc and drive in my box.
