Last Monday my computer power supply failed. I had shut it down the night before and the next morning it was dead. I took it to a local computer shop and they tested my power supply and they confirmed my fears.

Hence, I ordered a new PSU (both corsair) and sent my old one in under warranty. On Friday I installed the new PSU and it worked fine for one day and now it is dead as well!!!!!!!!! So, what could be causing this? Is this just bad luck with regards to PSU or is there something else frying my PSU? The surge protector is fine and my back up computer works fine with it. Any ideas what could be causing this???? I need help as I am at a loss......

Nosey, remove the cover and get the dust bunnies out of your card. It should run no hotter than 70 in game!

Geezer, can you swap in the PS from your spare computer to test?

Have you checked Newegg reviews see if it's an issue with that particular PS.

As pan said, internal fail-safes should protect the PS if something is wacky with your computer.

Lucky I guess, I've only had one PS die on me in 15 years.

Hey Geezer it could be just bad luck. In my experience if the PS is overloaded it just shuts down because of internal fail-safes. I've rarely seen them just die because of overloading. Power supplies die because of worn out or inferior components. I've built more PCs than I can count and this problem. So bring this in and see if it's dead or just shut itself down. If it tests ok then you have a short or overloading issue.

While that temperature would most certainly damage the vid card it would not fry the PS. The problem was that a vid driver was released that canceled the auto fan control causing the fan not to speed up along with the temperature.

Don't know if this helps, but that MSI afterburner that the BCO guys recommend for monitoring comp may help,
This weekend I read up on why my 8800GT vid card may be causing BSOD (blue screen of Death). Turns out it tends to run hot. So I checked MSI reading and it was 97C. I updated driver and showed an instant drop to 73C.

Um ...did that help.

Anyway I did want to respond as I see NOBODY else is .
