....that I have absolutely no idea how to use.

I was looking into getting a vent server but the prices where a bit much for what I am getting. I just dont like the idea of paying for a specific program running on a server when I know I can get my own server and run whatever I want on it. So I checked into cloud computing and found a reasonably priced package. It works on a pay as you use it basis so if I cant get it to work I can just shut it off. It is small atm but can be expanded as needed.

Right now I just want it to run a couple vent servers. Latter I want to host web sites and maybe some game servers. Maybe even some MMO servers. I know OMO has had servers before and I would be happy to make this one available for OMO use.

I know nothing about Linux or running a server. I did get it booted up thanks to a good tutorial. I got stuck when I had no idea how to upload a file to it. The only operating systems I have used are windows and dos. I know we have a few tech gurus around here. Maybe one of you could give me a hand running it. Or at least direct me to a place I can learn myself.

Thanks for the help. The tech stuff as to how the cloud works is not really important. The basic situation is I have a remote server that I can only access through the internet. I can have a variety of OS installed onto it when it is created. I have several sitting on standby that I will mess around with latter. As expected I have a lot to learn.

LOL, I highly recommend the Ubuntutu.....

I gotta back you up on the Ubuntutu idea. Good call.

LOL
HEARTBURN-OMO Posted - Nov 15 2010 : 14:55:03
Yep, that cleared it up...lol

I can hear you guys... but linux is a completely different beast.

Ok, let´s start from scratch. So I´m not quite sure if I have understood that all correctly. Some of it doesn´t make sense to me.
Now here is the thing, a Virtual Machine (VM) needs to run on a real machine. Normally the VM is packed into a couple of files which needs an application to run that VM. There are a couple of free VM players which are able to do that, but for setting up a machine most of the time you need to buy the full package so you can setup your system to your liking. For example how much memory it should take from the host system, how many network adapters and so on and so forth.

You can do that all on your home machine and it´s the best way to fiddle around with Operating Systems you´re not familiar with.

To setup such a VM you have to clarify the following tasks:

1. Which host is running the guest VM?
e.g. you can have multiple VM´s running as long as the VM player supports it and as long as the host is able to cope with the ressource consumption.

2. Setup the software for the VM host, maybe take a look at the VMware website or the website of what you´re using.

3. Install the VM guest, in this case a linux distribution, if you can please provide a link where you get your stuff from and who is offering the software. They probably have some documentation where I can take a quick look what needs to be done.

4. and that is mostly working through online documentation for the linux distribution: get familiar with the Linux commands and software that you can install. Not all VM´s support all of the functionality linux offers. Or it comes down to how to configure the system properly.
For example we´re using Plesk for our gateway servers which are capable of running php, sql but are limited in a couple of ways. The ftp server is preinstalled and is only giving access to some directories. We haven´t figured out yet how to add mainly root folders to the ftp server.

Maybe Ubuntu isn´t such a bad idea, since there is such a big user group and pretty much all of the information is public.
If all that fails you can make a dual boot system on your home machine and start working with this system, but you should read up on that before you start. Maybe there are some basic ubuntu vm´s available which you can download and start with a free vm player.

Cheers

You think after years of messing with these computers...getting pretty smart..then, this kinda stuff comes up and it's all greek and I realize how stupid I am...lol
Old Bugger OMO Posted - Nov 13 2010 : 12:20:27
It is already set up fir TCP/IP I believe. At least I had no prob transferring a file. Well, once I figured out how. I can open ports as needed. The VM does not run on my home machine. It runs on the server and turns my machine into a slave. There was only one file so I have no idea if I am supposed to use some kind of front end on my machine. Since I failed to get it installed I didnt bother looking at any documentation for the VM. Im sure its there. Prob has good tech support too since its made for business. They prob dont have 10,000 idiots calling them every day asking stupid questions. So I will be the only one.

Nice cup. If I get more into it I will prob order one. Lol.

Well, sounds like you need more coffee in a cup like this.

Is Linux allready installed with tcp/ip socket? There is a config file where you have to put in the dns server adress and the ip for the server so the services can be reachable on that (virtual) machine. Is there any documentation available from the provider how to install the VM so that everything is etup properly.
I guess it´s a computer center where that instance is running so the support team should give you the needed information.
If you haven´t put any user and password I think default is root and pw root.

cheers
Old Bugger OMO Posted - Nov 12 2010 : 12:55:17
Yes that was all helpful. I got to the point where I tried to use sudo to install OS and it would not let me without a password. No idea where I find that. So I killed the instance and started over thinking I missed something in the setup. Now I cant even log into any instance. The only thing I was doing different was using a OS image that installs ubuntu when it is created.

First I couldnt get my keys to work so I reset them and made a 3rd instance. I cannot even connect to that one. Terminal times out. I looked at my bill so far and it was $6 for 18 hours. So I made a smaller instance. Not a lot of room on it for any kind of fancy OS.

I have learned a lot about linux though. can navigate, manage files and upload. Have not made any scripts yet or even tried to use a text editor but I have read aboout it.

Edit: The connection problem seems to have been temporary. The keys not working problem is still happening on servers that have non default OS. I know I am in over my head here but it seems like I was so close. frustrating.

Ok I see. Putty is just fine to get access to the system. Have you allready connected succesfully to the server with Putty?
What you need to do is select ssh (secure shell) for the protocol layer and the ip adress.
Now when you´re logged in I guess you´re logged in with the root user.
Root user doesn´t have admin status per se. For example installing packages like sql, php or else are done by the command apt-get and then package name as parameter or argument. apt-get needs admin rights which you do with adding the command sudo apt-get "package name". Then it will ask for the user password and command will be executed.
To have a GUI interface probably will need a couple of other packages like an advanced terminal to get remote access over the installed GUI, you will have to read on the net to figure out how to get remote access with the GUI.
But to install a software on the server just needs a secure shell terminal connection and you´re rdy to go.
Hope that helps a bit....

Yes I read about the GUI overlays and that would help, except one thing. I do not have direct access to the server. It is a remote virtual server. It is nothing more than a operating system on a virtual partition of a virtual computer floating around in cyberspace. I can open a window that gives me a command line but other than that I have no idea how to interface my windows OS with the Linux command window.

I have found several pieces of software that could help me do what I am trying to do but I have to be able to upload and install the software. I found a script for uploading to a linux server but its a linux script. So I would need to be running linux on my home system. I am downloading a VMware workstation right now. It is supposed to run on virtual machines to give you a windows 7 desktop. I think I will have the same problem because all of the cloud computing market is geared toward business and they assume you have a system administrator on staff.

Edit: Seems I already had file transfer ability. I am using a program called PuTTY to open my session. There is a program in the PuTTY package that does files transfers. Not exactly easy to use but I finally got it to transfer my file. After about a hour. Lol. Now if I can just figure out how to install it.

Getting really tired of help files with this line "If you are in doubt about what to do next, consult your system administrator."

I AM MY SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR YOU

Growing up with DOS, command line interface is not unfamiliar. Studs is right though. Go with his suggestion.
Studebaker-OMO Posted - Nov 11 2010 : 12:13:03
I have a bit of experience with the ubuntu LTS 10.04 server, but most commands like apget <package> are pretty much the same on every linux server. If you´re not a big fan of command line interpreter and vi ( which you´ll be as a regular windows user) you can install a GUI interface like gnome or kubuntu. Most general information is available on the net, for example ubuntu has a large user base and if I remember correctly if you search for ubuntu user in google it will come out on top...

here is a link for ubuntu:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Servers

here is another link worth looking at:
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Maverick

I think Maverick is the latest LTS version.

cheers

I'm not the techy buggy, but thanks for stepping up there "tough guy". We are now on our way to being a "real" club again. Do we have techies here anymore?!?!?!

If Arcane comes 'round perhaps we can re-engage that dude.
