Hey Fuddy and all you knowledgeble AMD folks out there, does this look like a good deal

Asus K8N MB,(Athlon64 3700+,754pin) CPU,FAN AMD Socket 754pin DDR MB, Athlon64 3700+ 754pin CPU, Fan $301.99

I know nothing about AMD processors since I always use Intel so I need some help. I think this board has the PCI Express slots. If not I'll be looking at something else.

Fuddy, what I listed above is the Asus K8N MoBo with the AMD Athlon64 3700+ and the heat sink and fan, combo, all for $301.99 If I was to get an Intel processor it would be more than that by itself.

Heart, I wasn't going to change my graphics card. I am using the ATI x700 in AGP form. If I decide to get the MoBo/processor combo I mentioned above, I'll have to get a PCI express card. I'm just window shopping for now. By the time I get around to doing anything they may have a 128 bit processor out.
I have a 17 monitor with a flat screen. It's pretty sharp and clear. Samsung SyncMaster 753df, but with the price of monitors coming down I'd like to get a 19 or bigger. As far as the flat panel monitors, I love them but have heard they aren't holding up too good so I guess I'll wait another year to worry about a monitor.

I don't know much about this but when I bought my card. Smelly-OMO helped me pick it out...and It was like a week process. If you have a flat screen you can't get the 2000 resolutions and you end up wasting your money on a higher end card. However, if you have a regular monitor, shoot for the moon. Does this make any sense to anyone? I run a 21 inch flat sceen and he said I would be wasting my money if I went to the 6000 series. I went ahead and spent the bucks and got a 6800 GT OC cause I always like the extra horse power even if I don't get to punch it to the floor.

From the research I have done on AMD processors, the best deal at the moment is to go for the AMD ATHLON 3500 because it lends itself to overclocking and thereby approacheable in performance to that of the 4000 (all for $100 less than the 4000)
If money is no object and you want the best, go for the AMD Athlon 64 FX57 (a snip at just over $1000)

ok, back to reality. The 3700 is in fact a great deal and a good gaming processor (dare I say overclockable)
and here is a comparison


There are some that say, if you're going for the 3700 then it's better to pay the extra and get the 3800. However, once you're at that level why not go for the 4000 and if you're there why not the FX55 and if etc

Moral of the story.... you gets what you pay for.

Cathy just make sure that you have a platform that is upgradeable as possible. There are some great MB comparisons out there and it is worth taking a little time and reading them.. they'll make more sense than I do.
