Posted - Jan 17 2007 : 09:28:08 Product Description
The PAC (Pan Asian Coalition) has secretly moved into northern and central Europe, using abandoned urban areas to establish new strongholds. Intense close-quarters warfare awaits the EU forces when they mobilize troops for a full-force assault to claim back their land. The Battlefield 2142: Northern Strike™ Booster Pack brings all-out infantry-focused battles into new snow-covered battlegrounds across Europe.
Three new maps provide the setting for the Booster Pack. High up in the Alps the EU uses launch pods to launch an assault on a PAC Titan docking harbour on the map Port Bavaria. Bridge at Remagen, the scene for one of WWII’s major battles, is once again the setting for intense battles as both sides fight to secure the bridge. Finally, night has fallen when the EU launches their assault on the city in the Liberation of Leipzig..
Battlefield 2142: Infantry Storm offers an asymmetrical vehicle set-up with one new vehicle available to each army. The heavy IFV Goliath is a massive, slow-moving firing platform available to the EU, the attacking side, only. It is used to provide cover, as well as health and ammunition, to nearby infantrymen. The fast-moving hovering light IFV Speeder, available to the defending PAC only, is an efficient vehicle killer when staffed by a well coordinated pilot/gunner team.
With ten new unlocks, also available in the core game, and ten new awards, Battlefield 2142: Infantry Storm offers unprecedented persistence for a Booster Pack and makes the Battlefield 2142 experience deeper than ever before.
The epic Titan mode introduced in Battlefield 2142 is available on two maps, and for the first time in an urban setting. All maps also feature Conquest mode with a tweaked Conquest Assault set-up, in which the attacking army (the EU) now has to conquer all control points before taking the enemy’s main base. Welcome to the future of war! Key Features
* Fast–paced, infantry-focused gameplay boosts the intensity of the all-out war experience. * Three new maps set in Europe, where snow-covered post-apocalyptic cities and a ridge in the Alps become the new battlegrounds. * Two brand-new vehicles designed to support infantry combat available in an asymmetrical set-up, with the hovering light IFV Speeder available to the PAC and the massive heavy IFV Goliath available to the EU. * Increased persistence. Ten new rewards and ten new unlock items at the top of the unlocks trees, available also on core game maps, take persistence to new levels. Unlock credits earned in the booster pack can also be used in the core game. * Epic Titan mode available on two maps, and for the first time in a urban setting, for more intense Titan gameplay. * Tweaked Conquest-assault gameplay (Assault Lines game mode) on all three maps creates more choke points and more heated battles. * New use of pods gives infantry additional ways of moving across the maps quickly
* Requires Battlefield 2142 PC to play. ** Internet connection required |

How many boosters are they talking here? I see Battlefield 2142: Northern Strike™ and also Battlefield 2142: Infantry Storm. Are they switching up names on the same pack or are they releasing 2 ? Also, any word on suggested price for said "new content"? |

Posted - Jan 17 2007 : 18:01:53 The BF2 boosters served more as a diversion than a standard. Not enough people bought them, which is too bad since I was a huge fan of the Euro booster. The Special Forces Explansion was the best, but even more separated from BF2 since you couldn't run the maps on the same server.
I think they learned their lesson from the SF experience and won't release another "expansion" (SF was essentially a full blown Mod). The fact that the booster maps will slide right into the rotation should increase it's adoption for people looking for new content. I think the BF2 boosters failed because of SF forced people into BF2 or SF. The boosters were viewed as worsening an already bad situation. Each booster served to create more subsegments of players without moving the whole community together.
Had the boosters been rolled out first, I think they would have been much more successful. At least there's an attempt to move the 2142 community together. There are lots of players and plenty of servers that would appreciate more content. However, being the first content may not prevent servers clearing out when new maps start loading...
I am waiting for the free Wake Island 2142 map. Every other BF had a Wake map, why not this game... |

Posted - Jan 17 2007 : 17:42:28 When I kill Undertaker or Hairplug for the 20th or 30th time in a round, they make sure to let me know that I am not playing against bots.... yes, there may be some exageration involved in my previous statement. |

Posted - Jan 17 2007 : 12:30:32 Now, on a more serious note: while this looks promising, I am rather skeptical considering how popular the regular BF2 packs were. I enjoyed the expansions, but the issue with the expansions was the fact that not everybody got them. Unlike community mods and maps, the added cost feature of 'official' add on packs limits people's participation in the game. The OMO had a couple years of good gaming out of Mech Warrior 4 simply because the added maps were freely available - ableit difficult to add sometimes.
The problem I have with EA is that it wants to capitalize on everything, as well as control everything. Take the fact that they do not allow 3rd party websites to tap into the stats for 2142. EA does not gain any money from us when we view our stats on their own site so why make it difficult for 3rd parties? Abuse? Unless you can upload there cannot be any. There are community mods and maps, but none of them can be added to the Ranked system which means people are less likely to play the mods (I like my unlocks be they BF2 or 2142 darn it!). The POE2 mod and AI mod are fun to play, but not enough people seem to play to warrant playing wihtout bots (I am biased - I prefere humans). The problem with the mods is that they are not simple add ons like maps but alterations to the game mechanics requiring additional instalation. A lot of people are usually fine adding a map so they can play but not many are fine with having to install a mod.
So EA prevents the community from making it's own maps for the official game and prevents Ranked information from being passed to third parties. Thanks. Unless the unlocks appear worth anything more than squat I'll be passing this add on by. |
