I guess I haven't been on the forums for a while. Thanks for the kind words. I wanted to get the #1 spot back from a couple of guys from the UK. One of the guys basically only plays Liberation and only rides in the goliath. I put a hurting on their numbers, so it will be awhile before they will catch up.

I haven't had a long winded, mostly ignored post about a strategy in a while, so here are my tips for those interested in Goliath (secret killing methods at the end ).

A good driver can rack up a decent amount of points, aka BF2 pre-nerfed Black Hawk. You get points for kills (shotgun or motion mine), kill assists from any of the gunners, flag captures and assists, and teamwork points/driver assists (heals, repairs or re-supplies, by the driver or anyone in the Goliath). The gunners get points for kills, kill assists and individual teamwork points.

It can be a killing machine if people work together. Nothing gets me peaved than a bad driver (goes straight for the locked base to base camp, ignores red dots in the area, doesn't take flags, suicide missions, etc) or clueless gunners (see rules that follow).

Since the gunner position seems to be the most popular, I will start there:

There are two basic rules of gunning in the Goliath. #1 is keep your eye on the IDS scanner that I put on the Goliath or the UAV to keep track of the infantry (don't allow an engineer or recon to sneak up from the sides or behind). The cannons can kill anything up close from the nose much of the rear. The machine guns should be protecting the rear. #2 rule is take out the rail gun gunners first (very hard to destroy them), infantry second (if they use follow rule 1, they would smoke them before the rail guns can target the Goliath. Know the map and the general placement of rail guns. Aim for the the top seam of the gun (between the barrel and the enclosure) or the sides. Too many people want the easy kills and focus on the infantry they see running around (usually not engineers or recon) while the rail gun picks off the shields and drops the health faster than any other weapon (other than the destruction methods mentioned below).

Some additional notes for gunners: The cannons and machine guns overheat pretty fast if you spam shots...the recovery time in the cannons is really long. In other words, shoot in bursts and watch the temperature gauge. The cannons are essentially ineffective against walkers, APCs and Hachimotos. However, you can shoot the gunner and driver out of the Hachimoto pretty easy (aim at the people not the vehicle), but do little damage to the vehicle. Regardless, don't overheat the guns trying to take down the walker, focus on rail guns and infantry. Also, like many of the BF-series vehicle weapons, SPLASH DAMAGE IS YOUR FRIEND! The cannons can take out infantry hiding or waiting around corners, on a balcony or hallway, roof top, cat walk, etc... Shoot in the general area of a red dot or known infantry location until you get a hit indication and then focus your shots on that area. Finally, some of the gunners need to get out to speed up the capturing of a flag (most don't since they don't want to give up their seat).

My opinion is the driver is the most important person in the Goliath. A good driver will focus on keeping the vehicle healthy, positioning the gunners for success, taking out vehicles with the motion mines (infantry secondary with the shotgun) and capturing flags.

Keeping the Goliath healthy (keep as many shields as possible)is key to leveraging the strength of the Goliath. Avoid exposure to rail guns from long distances that will snipe out shields. If it can't be avoided, take a path that limits the exposure of the side panels to the rail gun. Always hit motion mines straight on moving forward with the front of the Goliath. The motion mines will do little to no damage if you are at full health and hit them moving forward no matter how many are there. The tend to do a lot more damage if you are backing up when they hit. If they are spread out, activate them and back up a until they cluster, then hit them moving forward. If you don't, you will end up losing your side shields. If you have some mines behind you, attempt to turn the Goliath around and hit them from the front. They will slow or stop if you rotate 180 degrees. The problem is that one motion mine from behind will usually take out both rear shields. Finally, limit the exposure of the side and rear shields when battling walkers. Also, walkers are mostly ineffective when they are too close or too far, whereas the motion mine will work no matter what.

Make sure you position your front cannon gunners so both have shots at rail guns and infantry. They have a limited firing radius, so you need to point the front at the main target area. Let them take out the infantry while you get the assists.

The driver has potent offensive weapons with the motion mine and shotgun cannons (I am still amazed that some drivers don't know the motion mine exists). Focus on vehicles first, infantry second. Try to hit the vehicle with the mine as these motion mines will explode and damage on contact. Otherwise, they don't track as long or as accurately as engineer motion mines. A Goliath with as few a couple of shields should have zero problem taking out a full health walker. The motion mine does more damage when hitting the legs, rear and space between the legs and torso. When a walker is close, I aim for the space between the legs and torso as they tend to do a lot of damage or shoot through and then come back and hit the walker in the rear. You can also bounce them off walls to land them or hit the back side of the walkers. Otherwise, I try to attack from a distance as the motion mines have a much greater range than the walker's rockets.

How to Destroy a Goliath (the part most of you want to know)

FYI, one engineer can take out a Goliath with 5 motion mines in a certain situations...if you place all five mines under the Goliath (crawl under from the back of the Goliath), the instant it moves, it will be destroyed. The easiest way to accomplish this is to spawn camp it. You probably will have to wait out a few Goliaths to sneak to the spawn point and wait for it to respawn. It won't work if you have the Goliath whores congregating at the spawn point. If you can lay down some EMP mines, you have the luxury of stopping it and they won't be able to aim their guns. You can then sneak up from behind and then crawl under place another EMP mine and then place your motion mines. However, the EMP effect won't last long enough to lay down five mines. You may not need to get all five mines down if it is damaged or a few panels are gone. Regardless, if they don't stop for too long, you will either get squished or blown up when it starts moving and the Goliath will not be destroyed.

Other strategies that work are deploying motion mines (the more the better) and then throwing motion mine bait at a moving Goliath. The movement will set them off. If the Goliath isn't moving, the mine bait will explode the mine and might not cause much if any damage. You can throw a bait under the front sometimes, but the back is easier.

Sneaking up from behind is a fairly effective way to take out panels or blow up a damaged Goliath. Most drivers or gunners still don't use a support IDS to see track infantry. Also, most gunners switch seats to the front cannons, leaving the back un-guarded. Even better, a lot of the rear gunners end up facing forward. But the best thing is almost nobody will get out of the Goliath if you get up close to kill you since they don't want to give up their seat.

The Recon decoy is especially effective for sneaking up to a Goliath especially when an support IDS is used. This will give the Goliath a false sense of security where they think you are not near the Goliath when you are placing your RDX all around them. Recon cloaking is effective even with the support IDS as most gunners won't pay attention to the minimap or won't know where to shoot.

No... it's impossible for a single person to take one down, even with a constant resupply. Even a walker will lose a one-on-one battle, provided that the Goliath still has shield generators. It pretty much takes a team effort... some combination of someone using demopaks on the shield generators, motion mines, walkers, Pilums, and rail guns.
