Fred is the little guy on my shoulder below.
For 15 years, he was my sidekick. He followed me everywhere and always wanted to be close to me. When I’d go upstairs to play guitar or play games on my computer, he’d invariably trot upstairs and take his place in the bed by my chair. To him, I was pretty special.
Unfortunately, he also had a heart murmur and his heart had to work a bit harder and it grew too large. Last Saturday night, it was obvious that he was struggling and we made the difficult decision to end his suffering.
I’m really missing him.

Aged, I'm so sorry for your loss! 15 years is a long time to have such a close friend... especially one that thinks the world of you. Fred was with you through a lot too. Sad to hear the bad news my friend

I recently got home after 3 months in Indonesia… My old boy “Oscar” was being looked after by a friend, he was due some surgery for a lump on his chest - I didn’t want to put my friend through the added difficulty of a very large dog with a ‘cone of shame’ so we scheduled the operation for our return… when we got back the lump was huge it had grown from a tennis ball size to a football. I really thought he wouldn’t survive the ‘op’. Long story short - surgery was a huge success, he has bounced back so well. They are amazingly resilient creatures. So I think he is sticking around for a little while longer.

This is Ernie. He was Fred’s brother and they were pretty inseparable. Starting Wednesday afternoon, Ernie began throwing up and I had a feeling that something had turned for him. I took him to the vet and they gave us some meds to soothe his stomach and to stimulate his appetite. For a while, we’d known that Ernie had Cushing’s disease, a condition where the body produces too much cortisol. There are treatments, but no cure. His pot belly is an effect of the disease.
Last night, we took him to the hospital. The vet said there might be something she could do to treat it and possibly give him some more time as well as ease some of his suffering, but first she needed to do some bloodwork. We were bringing him in to have him put down, so we gladly decided to give it a shot. Unfortunately, the bloodwork came back showing that he was in renal failure as well. Given his age and condition, the prognosis was no longer good and we made the decision to end his suffering.
Fred and Ernie, the boys, were an integral part of our lives for about 15 years. With both of them gone, we’re left trying to figure out what now. There will be little things that we’ve become accustomed to that just won’t be necessary. Case in point, when I got up this morning, I thought “why put on my slippers, I don’t need to go outside”.
We’re going to miss the boys.

It's always painful and there are never words that another can say that help. Thank you for sharing, Aged, as I know it's been difficult the past few months with both Fred and Ernie passing. I do know this... there are other canine friends out there looking for someone like you to be a lifetime companion when you are ready. There will never be a replacement, still there is the possibility of establishing a brand new relationship and all the wonderful new memories that will come from that.
