I had to re-install Mercs. Without the patch all works fine. But when I apply the mercpr1 patch, the game will not start. I put in the disk and the 1st Merc picture comes up and then just disappears.
I've uninstalled and reinstalled ,then applied the patch, several tries.
Is XP as evil as wise Aged says? Help!!

I'd love to be able to say "I told you so", but there are people that can play Mercs with XP.
I'm not one of them, but can you provide any more information about what's happening?

I put in the disc, and the menu comes up. I click PLAY. The picture of a mech firing 4 lasers comes up. Then the normal cinematics do not come up, the window just closes. No error message or anything.
If I don't apply the patch I can get all the way to the MP lobby listing all the games as "new versions".

sadly, I've been addicted to NWN on the DW server...
Then Bioware is releasing the expansion this month, which means I will have more reason to be online to level up my character... can't wait for HW2 to arrive.

After sucessfully uninstalling the game I checked my C drive and found the entire game still there! It may be cause I copied the old comps Mercs file into the new one to keep the maps, etc. So I manually deleted the Mercs after uninstalling and the game now runs with the patch.
Unfortunatly,I now have the same problem that made me uninstall to begin with, namely that when I click on a server to get in a game the screen freezes, can't alt/caps to get out, have to cut power to reboot.
I think I'll E-mail Mercs Customer Service but I'm at the point of moving on.

Lord Help Me!!!!!!!!!!!!My comp isn't even a week old!
Hello William,
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Support.
I am Wasif from Microsoft Games Online Support and I will be helping you today with MechWarrior Mercenaries.
As I understand, while trying to multiplayer the game freezes on the lobby screen and also the game used to work on the old system.
William ,this issue can occur, if the DirectX ports required to play the game are blocked. It can also occur if the DirectX is outdated.
To resolve this issue, we need to open these ports,
To Verify if these ports are open or not , please contact your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
If you are the administrator of the network, please see your networking software documentation to determine how to open this
For information about the DirectX ports required to play a multiplayer game of Mercenaries click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
240429.KB.EN-US DirectX: Ports Required to Play on a Network http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;240429
Also to troubleshoot this issue let us try the following steps.
Do you have the latest DirectX installed? ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: It is highly recommended that all participating players use the same version of DirectX.
To download and install the latest version of DirectX, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp
If you have the latest DirectX installed, try reinstalling after performing a clean boot on your computer
Perform a Clean Boot on your computer --------------------------------------------------------------------- When you start Microsoft Windows it is possible that other software may be starting with the operating system. These programs, which may include antivirus and system utility programs, can interfere with the game; consequentially, you may be returned to the desktop, receive an error message during multiplayer session, or the game may stop responding (hang).
When you perform a clean boot before you start setup, you prevent these programs from starting automatically. To perform a clean boot, follow the steps appropriate for your version of Windows. Games: How to Perform a Clean Boot to Prevent Background Programs from Interfering with Play
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;331796
Important: Manually disable any anti virus programs running on the system.
Now try playing the game, in case the issue still persists try the next step.
Test to see if DirectX and DirectX Network files are installed properly ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ To test that DirectX has been properly installed and that all DirectX files are the correct version, follow these steps:
1. Click on Start point to Run and type: dxdiag 2. Click OK. 3. In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, click the DirectX Files tab and check that no problems are reported under Notes. 4. Click the Network tab and check that no problems are reported under Notes.
Use DirectX Diagnostic to Test your Network ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Click on Start point to Run and type dxdiag, then click OK. 2. On the Network tab of DirectX Diagnostic Tool click the Test DirectPlay button.
3. In the DirectPlay Test dialog box, type your name in the User Name box. 4. Click DirectPlay TCP/IP Service Provider. 5. Enter the port if necessary in the TCP/IP port box. 6. Click to select Create New Session and then click OK. 7. You should see the Dxdiag DirectPlay Chat. 8. Ask the other player to join your session by choosing Join Existing Session radio button.
Note: If you run the DirectPlay test over the Internet, the hosting player must send the joining player(s) his current IP address.
9. Perform the test again, but now as a joining player (ask the other player to act as a host). 10. If DirectPlay test works correctly, you should be able to make the connection from within the game without problems.
Test Your Connection Speed -------------------------------------------------------------------- To test your connection speed, you can visit the following MSN Web site: http://tech.msn.com/internet/speedtest.asp
If your reported connection speed appears to be less than you expect you should contact your Internet Service Provider to troubleshoot that issue.
Do you have a software firewall installed? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- A software firewall is a security system that acts as a protective boundary between a network and the outside world.
If you have a software firewall installed, it can prevent your computer from Connecting to other computers or servers for a multiplayer session.
You can look in your system tray (the small area, in the lower right-hand corner of your screen) to see if a firewall is running on your computer. Under Windows XP you may need to show all icons in the System Tray in order to reveal your firewall icon. To reveal the program that an icon represents place your pointer over the icon and wait a few seconds. Then you find the icon for your firewall try right clicking to reveal a menu that may allow you to temporarily disable the firewall. Some common software firewalls include: Zone Alarm, Norton's Internet Security, Mcafee Security, BlackIce, etc.
If disabling firewall resolves the issue, contact the Firewall software manufacturer for directions on how to configure it to work with your game or simulation
To disable windows firewall, try the steps listed in the following Microsoft Knowledge base article 283673.KB.EN-US HOW TO: Enable or Disable Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;283673
Try playing the game now and in case the issue still persists try the next steps
Do you have ICF enabled? ---------------------------------------------- The latest Windows includes Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) software you can use to restrict what information is communicated between the Internet and your home or small office network. ICF also protects a single computer connected to the Internet with a cable modem, a DSL modem, or a dial-up modem.
You should not enable the firewall on any connection that does not directly connect to the Internet, and ICF is not needed if your network already has a firewall or proxy server.
For more information on ICF refer the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article
234815.KB.EN-US Description of Internet Connection Sharing http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;234815
Update the Modem Drivers. ---------------------------------- To Update the modem drivers contact your modem or computer manufacturer.
If the issue continues to occur, try another Internet Service provider. There are many free ISPs available on the internet.
Note: If nothing helps on dial up connection, faster internet connections might be your solution. DSL or cable connections are a great way for gamers to get more performance.
Use Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) Compliant Network ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ UPnP is more than just a simple extension of the Plug and Play peripheral model. It is designed to support zero-configuration, "invisible" networking, and automatic discovery for a breadth of device categories from a wide range of vendors.
With UPnP, a device can dynamically join a network, obtain an IP address, convey its capabilities, and learn about the presence and capabilities of other devices-all automatically; truly enabling zero configuration networks. Devices can subsequently communicate with each other directly; thereby further enabling peer to peer networking.
If you are buying new hardware, you should look for the UPnP logo on the box. If you have UPnP hardware as part of your existing network you should confirm that it is enabled in the settings or to contact the manufacturer for assistance.
Try all these steps and let me know the response of each of these steps.
I am looking forward to your response and thank you again for using Microsoft Online Assisted Support.
