I have been playing every night since Friday. Not sure, but that is about 12 hours. Still suck pretty bad on most maps, but do ok on others.
I want my upgrades! how do you unlock weapons? I've seen, briefly, a message saying I made Corporal (at least I think I did). This was in online play. I'm showing Private in the stats page and nothing is unlocked (nor can I unlock it, as far as I can tell).
What does it take to unlock weapons? Any weapons. I'm playing primarily Assault, so that would be good enough for me.

With 12 hrs on the clock your rank will be Pvt. Your first opportunity to unlock a weapon will be when you make Lance Corporal. You will be able to unlock ONE weapon so make your choice carefully. The "kits" you play (Assault, Medic, Support, etc) make no impact on the weapon unlock. You can choose to unlock a weapon from any kit once you hit Lance Corporal. You will have a while to consider which weapon you will unlock and I would advise unlocking a weapon from a kit you enjoy playing. Ask around and get opinions from the other guys. The next unlock from Lance Corporal comes with the next rank you obtain...its a looooong way off, believe me!
BTW... when I made Lance I had been playing a lot in the Anti Tank kit so I unlocked the shotgun for that kit. In retrospect it was not a bad choice... rate of fire over the base weapon is much improved, and it holds a lot of ammo so reload comes less often. A sweet weapon at SHORT range. Caution, BP, unlocked weapons are not VASTLY better than than the defaults... dont get your hopes up too high.

Your first promotion will be Private First Class and you don't get to unlock anything. When you make lance corporal you'll get to unlock 1 weapon. What is your Global Score? Your promations are bassed on GS.
From what I understand the unlocked weapon for Assult doesn't have the grenade launcher so it doesn't sound like an upgrade to me.
I chose the upgraded machine gun for the Spec Opps kit. It's more accurate and does pretty good. I am working on Corporal now and should get it by Sunday if I play at my currant pace. I think I'll go for the upgraded supply weapon since I've been using the supply kit a lot recently. My kill to death ratio sucks but has been going up fast in the last 2 weeks using it and after updating my graphics drivers.
If I were you I'd use each kit at least 3 matches each before making a decision on you unlock.

Definetely get the upgraded supply weapon Catheter. It's the PKM and while it seems to be no more accurate than the standard weapon it has a lot more stopping power. It has a slightly smaller clip and overheats a little quicker but, it makes mincemeal out of troops. I think it's a great weapon.

My concern is that my Stats page is all Zeros. And I mean ALL zeros, it is a clean sheet. Nothing of what I've been doing shows in the stats and that is the same section that you can tab over to the kit descriptions that show the locks.\
Do I need to set something to track my activiities?
I hope I don't have to subscribe to some stinking service in order for these stats build up.

Ok, got it figured out. for some reason last night the game had all my settings zero'd out. Not sure why. I checked it again today and can see my progress. I'm 1/2 way to PFC. I got a long way to go.

Yeah, that Corporal rank is a long ass way off. I play alot, all on ranked servers, and I'm still 75% of the way there. You
need like 8000 points or so to get Corporal. So get comfy once you hit Lance-Corporal it will take awhile for the next one. I chose
to unlock the spec-op weapon since I played that kit alot AND they were supposed to FIX the get no points for blowing resources
like UAV, SAT, and Arty up. Works good though on single shot :) Choose wisely.

I unlocked the sniper weapon for its ability to reach out and kill chopper pilots. The big thing about the long rifle is that one must WAIT and settle in without moving the mouse for a count of TWO before pulling the trigger. This has been discussed ad nauseum in the www.planetbattlefield.com/bf2/ forums and it seems to be agreed that this models the way real snipers shoot. Some 3 letter acronym that has a B in it to signify Breathe. The count of two simulates the breathe you take to settle in on target.
I know we all have tales of snipers flinging themselves prone and killing instantly in one shot, but I have had my best results when I find a target and count to two, then pull the trigger. I got a 260 yard kill the other night which for this game is out there. He was almost a dot. On the other hand I have missed from 6 feet running and trying to shoot with the scope stuck to my face. LAG or game modeling... you make the call.

I do better the further the away target is.
Oh, and I got my first Heli kill last night with my upgraded Sniper Rifle. The guy was hovering around the flag to turn it when I put a round through the glass. The Heli immediately went our of control, and crashed before the gunner could take control back - this was on an attack chopper as well. I was surprised since I didn't think it would actually penetrate the glass. Of course, my glee was short lived as someone else came up from behind and knifed me.

Oh: meant to say this: patience is a Sniper's best friend. I acually think the USMC and upgraded Sniper rifle are better in terms of forcing you to be patient in taking your shots since you have to lose sight of your target every time you rebolt.

I read something that said if you hold down the mouse button after you fire you will not lose your sight view. Anyone tried this?

Great tip on sniper rifle!!! I noticed it but was not sure if it was just lag or what?
Last night on a few of the maps the choppers dominated the play again ;( Which is not a problem if you feel hitting it three times with a rocket should knock it down..it didn't? Can I have some cheese with my whine please.
I have the shotgun weapon for unlocking but how do you do it? So I don't keep asking simple noob questions..is there a detailed manual on-line which is better than the crap one that came with game? Plus I'd like to research the VOIP mode to see if I can get it to work.

Buy the guide. It is all part of the money pit plan of EA to provide skimpy documentation in the game while loading up the guide for another $21.
From what I read about the upgraded sniper rifle, it is not bolt action, so does not have to sight drop away. Similar to the MEC sniper rifle.

The upgraded sniper weapon IS both action.
Holding the mouse button lets you continue to look at the target through the scope, but you WILL NOT get another round chambered until you drop the rifle to work the bolt.
The bad guy basic sniper weapon is semi auto so it should be good to go while holding the scope up, but you will still have to click again, so it will probably drop teh scope for a microsecond and you may lose your target.
I bought the guide and will be reading it while I am exiled to teh Hilton in Raleigh waiting to attend this wedding.

The non-USMC sniper rifle has an advantage in that you do not lose sight when you reload. It is less powerful, or at least less accurate than the USMC rifle. Both the USMC and the up-graded rifle are bolt action and to reload you lose sight, but they are more accurate in my experience. I use the upgraded sniper rifle all the time now simply for the sake of consistency.
Guides are for wimps.  Besides, I would rather spend money on better books to read than a strat guide.
