Here is a quote from a post in the web site for Galactic Civilizations from the creator of the game (or so I believe).
"And waiting for players on release date will be the BonusPak of extra goodies that aren't needed to play the game but a way of thanking new players for purchasing the game and that will have some even bigger surprises."
I would recommend everyone support this type of commitment to a game even before it is released. Way to go Stardock.
You can check it out at www.galciv.com and pre-order with free shipping and a bonus at www.gamestop.com for $39.99

quote:
Galactic Civilizations is a single player space based strategy game in which you are in control of humanity's destiny.
I don't do SP (or RTFM).
Maybe when it's out on X-box...

Well, considering these types of games are not really multiplayable (the time man, it's all in the time) good SP is the first thing I look for. I won't buy a game with lousy or no SP. Won't period. But, considering I like this genre (MOO3 has me po'ed) I most likely will support it - also because it is a ported game that was very popular on it's original platform (OS/2).
Hopefully they will have a demo . Then I won't have to wait long for it.

This annoucnement is nice. I like the fact that when you buy the game and it officially ships, you can DL it and start playing. The idea of combating piracy by offering something better is nice. I think I may support this just to support that and have a more updated TBS.

HEY AGED. Metaverse:quote:
Galactic Civilizations is a single player turn based strategy. However, for users who want to compete with other people from around the world, the Metaverse is provides a close approximation to that level of competition. When you finish a game, you can submit your score to the Metaverse. Your score is a form of currency. The more points you have, the higher ranked you are and the larger your empire is in the Metaverse. As you gain points, your title increases (peon up to grand master).
Players can also band together to form empires. The points of those players are put together into a single imperial score which is displayed on the galactic map as a single empire. Empires will have their own statistics on games, strategies, and journals and more.
GalCiv is also capable of downloading strategies automatically from the net. Submitted scores include basic information on what strategies were employed (what technologies were researched and in what order, what ships and improvements you built in what order, your style of playing, your moral strategy, the type of strategy employed overall, etc.). The GalCiv AI can then download this information from the Metaverse to improve both the quality of the AI and the humanity of it.
Eventually, Stardock hopes to allow players to literally choose a player from the Metaverse to play and simulate that player (roughly speaking) in a game. The only thing missing would be the time waiting for others to move and disconnects!
Scoring How many points you get on a game is dependent on these factories:
1) Did you win? 2) If you won, how did you win? 3) How long did it take you to win? 4) How many people were born into your civilization per sector? 5) How much technology did you amass? 6) What version of the game did you use?
These six factors are combined together to generate your score and submitted to the Metaverse at GalCiv.com.
Their encyclopedia: http://www.galciv.com/encyclopedia.asp
Sure, you might not be able to play "me", but you would eventually be able to play my composite AI. An interesting thought really - like chess games that "emulate" previous chess champions.

Heartburn,
I can not remember where I read it on the GalCiv site, but it was stated that GC is only SP game so they could produce a great AI that really is very hard and does not cheat.
Also, they had placed in the game many random events that will change the course of the game and from what I understand is that they are so many you may play for a month or two before you run into some of them!
The maps can be from very tiny to vast in size. The user is given a lot of control over the settings for the game and various victory conditions that you can choose.
Personally, I am looking forward to the game as they seems to have done a great job at it, and on top of that it has gone gold.

at the risk of asking a stupid question *holds hands over head to protect from Arcane hitting me there* do you have to be online to play the games? What I mean is can you play the games offline and when you get online it reports your scores? Or do you have to be online while playing? I only ask because with me traveling so much I am looking for something else to play on my laptop. Lot of these games are much too big. However, in August I have budgeted me a new laptop with a 3d accelerator that might help a little.

Hey Heartburn:
Did I mention:
Oh, and one from Arcane:
Now. To answer your question: You do not need to be online to play the game. Only online to upload your score and play data. ... oh, and
