Ever since "upgrading" to XP, my computer runs slower than molasses on a cold day (e.g., downloads run at just a bit more than dial-up speeds even though I have cable and the connection tests out fine). Is there any way to get rid of it short of polishing the hard drive?

Nope, not really. Lots of techie guys hear that can probably help you out thoug. What are your systems specs?
Couple of other things to check out; are there any devices not configured correctly (right click my computer, properties, hardware tab, device manager)? Anything with a yellow explanation point next to it means there is an issue with that device, usually incorrect driver.
Also check your task manager, what do you have running? CPU %?

No you cant :( If u you used the "upgrade" edition of XP there usualy is bugs than could be worked out if you have lots of time and a very good coach. The best thing you could probably do is save all your pics, emails,or anything to a CD or a email account, then go out and buy a real edition of XP thats not the "upgrade" (wich around here the cheapest ive found is $100.00) and totall redo or "format" your pc. It will bring the life back into it once again. Of course this is just from my experience back in the day lol

Logix is pretty much right from all the computer/OS problems Ive run into and fixed. I have really had no OS problems with the full install version. Those upgrades are really a crap shoot.
Good luck,

Aged I know of no way to roll it back to an older OS but you don't need to buy another copy of XP. You can use it to do a clean install, after you save all your personal files and format your drive.
Just click install and somewhere it asks for the cd of a previous verson of windows. Just stick a Win98 disk in your CD rom drive, it verifies you had a previous version and it goes on to install a clean full version of XP.
When you do an upgrade there are many problems including drivers, that work with older versions of Windows, that don't always work with XP.

hello Aged~ i'm afraid Catheter's right, but please don't do the vista beta on top of it... Do back up your data, and you can do a clean install using a 98 for proof of ownership. check the device manger, find the right drivers and and dont do anything else until you get the good-stuff backed up. you can re-install but you can't retake pictures or whatever. i install windows at work for a living, if you'd like a step by step please e-mail me...

Seriously... XP shouldn't be running like crap for you Aged. I'm not sure what's going on but I can get you some free MS tech support if you would like. There has to be something in upgrade that didn't install the proper drivers. Most likely its the chipset drivers that didn't update properly if you are seeing an over all slowless.
As far as Vista is concerned... it is Beta but it seems like a serious OS upgrade. I would say something equal to Win98 to WinXP. I agree with everyone else tho... don't do an upgrade.
You have my office number so give me a call.
