Technically: Yes.
Ethically, if you can't find a another copy: Yes.
Legally, if you can find another copy: NO.
I don't know about the if you cannot find another copy... hmmm.

Oh, and the HW CD is easily copied. However, There are fewer and fewer CDs that are copiable with standard CD-Rs and programs. I'm sure someone here knows of something that can help you elsewhere.

I know I would like to back up my IC and Freelancer CD, but I can't Nero 5.0 can't seem to do it. Maybe I am not trying hard enough? Also, I can't VCD the two games either. Very disapointing!

Legally you can make one copy for your own personal archival purposes. You may not distribute this copy and if you give up your original, you are obligated to destroy your archival copy.

Typically, software publishers make it difficult to make copies of distribution disks by simple means. There are ways to do it, but I'm not familiar with them since I've never done it. Arcane? ...

Ok... the deal with HW is that although you can "burn" a copy you have to have a CD Key to play on the 'net. The WON servers are required, I believe, to play multiplayer, even on a LAN (like in your case Nose).

My recommendation is: Buy a retail copy of the Game of the Year edition @ $9.99 and save your self a bunch of grief.

You all are aware of my strong stance against piracy you so you might think that I would find the entire topic in bad taste... well, I don't. Having 5 children, (all who like computer games by the way) I have run into this issue myself. If I want to play such & such game at home, with my children, I really need a "complete version" for each one (damn right expensive!!!) I loved versions of games that came with "spawnable" multiplayer (where you could run like 2 or three spawn versions with 1 original... no SP though). What a perfect solution. Anyway... in most cases I wind up getting 2 complete versions of the good games (like MW4, NeverWinter Nights, Operation Flashpoint, FreeLancer, Deus Ex, etc). Games in the Bargin bin, like HW, HW:C, Alpha Centari, MOO2... it is really almost cheaper (and way less frustrating) to just buy an additional copy (which in this case is exactly what I would recommend). BUT... I have "shared" software with my children, much the way you might with Music CDs (neither of which is strictly legal).

If you really need to burn software there are only 2 pieces of software that I can recommend CloneCD and CDRwin. Most other burn software will not do the job and get past the copy protection... leaving you with coasters for your coffee cup.

Petri has the right of it though... of that there can be no argument, truly.

Thanks Arcane.

I was just looking at CloneCD4 as a matter of fact. Since I use FarStones Virtual Drive (it works nicely with a few painful exceptions), I wanted to find something that could copy the games I can't create virtual copies of (like Freelancer and Impossible Creatures).

I may pick up an extra copy of HW for when my children get older.

You can actually burn the cd and load it onto another comp. HOWEVER< you will not be able to play multiplayer online unless you have 2 seperate keys. I tried it once on two comps at my house and when I tried to get online with the second machine, it waid the key was already in use. I see the cd at wallyworld all the time for 5 bucks.

Ummm.... Nose, if playing a game or two with your daughter is all you want to do then having another HW CD is not necessary. It is fairly simple as HW game engine checks for CD presence only at session start. Just have it installed on both machines and start a game on one of them first and got to main HW menu. Now take the CD out, load it to second PC and start HW and voila :-) You have HW running on both PCs no problem. This can be done on as many PCs as needed. The only catch is that doing like this you can have LAN games only.
Other than that OWOs are right; buy your self another copy if you want to have both of your PCs connected to WON at the same time. It's easy and not expensive solution.

Thanks Foggy for the clarification on the LAN side.

I thought it did a Key check there too... but it has been pretty long ago for me I'm glad I was wrong.

Heck, Nose, now you don't even have to burn the CD!

Yes, I am a dick I have been able to copy CD's, and Keys. I use this technology at home only for our 3 PC's. I would never recommend anyone copy and sell their games with the keys. Not only is this trackable from the original CD, if you were so inclined to register this CD, but it will also make your CD key inoperable if they decided to start checking. This may become expensive if you bought a $50.00 game, decided to burn it for a buddy and use a "keygenerator" oops....to get the CD key and have that server (WON reports to sierra) negate your CD key as well. Risky business. Not worth the trouble or the "wondering if they'll ever find out" stress that goes along with this. I am speaking from experience here, About 2 yrs ago, I decide to burn AOE2 for a friend, used a keygen...........gave it to him to play online..........about 12 hrs of playing time........and I could never log back in. No emails, nothing. Just said INVALID CD-KEY. I researched it and found out that they figured me out, and killed my CD-Key........My CD is useless for some reason.........learning lesson.
So like all OMO's are saying........just save the trouble and buy another copy!! Trust me.
