This happened recently to both Cadaver and me, so I thought I would post. Both of us resorted to re-installing the game. However, there may be simpler fix available. Try this before a re-install.

This was posted in a forum and has been effective for most people who recently started to have the problem.

Looks like something to do with the new billboard ads in the game screwed things up.

=========================================

I ran FileMon and found that BF2142 was looping while reading the file Radial.cdb. I took the following steps.

1) Go to your BF2142 folder, mine is C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142

2) Locate the file radial. cdb

3) Rename that file to something else. I renamed it to oradial.cdb (as in Old Radial.cdb)

4) That's it. I've now managed to hit over 10 servers with no problems whatsoever.

My guess is that this is a local holding file for information that is dynamically updated like the in game ads. If its not there, it is simply recreated by the game. My old version was over 18 megs, the new version is just over 4 megs.

Very interesting. Think I'll give it a spin.

Well, mine was only 1.8 megs in size, so it was not very large. It did, however, seem to work with the new radial cab file 1.6 megs in size. It must have some other relationship to the loading sequence where the size is not so much the issue than the length of time it has been in use and perhaps hit?

I know I kept the ads away by redirecting the 4 known web addresses it has to 127.0.0.1, which is why the file size is smaller. Knowing that you play more often than I do, I wonder how much more those who initially posted about it (where you came across the issue) had played.

Note: I am pretty sure that the file stores image data for the images seen in game. The initial portion may be a locational listing of where to put the adverts, but the latter half certainly strikes me as coding for the graphics and geometry for the default ads.

Makes me curious about the composition of that 18meg file you tucked away.

Petri, that was re-posted content, not my file data. I think it was probably a typo anyways. 18 MBs is too large. It was probably supposed to be 1.8 MB.

My old file was about 1.7MB while the one since the end of June is 3.8MB. I haven't done any mods to limit the ads. I think the size may be related to the servers played (relationship between EA and the server provider). I have been on servers with people on TS where we are looking at the same signs and seeing two different things (ad vs. generic billboard). It may be related to the processor, GPU or IP address. Not sure how they target the ads. I actually liked seeing the different images.

Ah, I see.

I don't particularly feel like rewarding EA for doing the in-game ads by having them display.
