I've been looking into the headset issue also so the wife will quit yelling "COULD YOU TURN THAT DOWN". It seems if you want true surround sound then you have to utilize all three plugs into the back of your sound card and like Bedpan said have to keep swapping plugs between 5.1 surround speakers and headset. I might go with the Creative Fatal1ty headset because it will plug into my Logitech 540X surround 5.1 controller that sits on desk which automaticly turns off speakers when you plug the head set in making it real convient.

"Y" cables really won't solve too much because if you have both headset and speakers pluged up then both will work at the same time and the on/off switch on most headsets just turns off the mic. So you would still have to keep pluging and unpluging things or wire in some kind of switch to turn off one or the other.

I have that exact splitter on my headphones now. So looks like I'd need three!

Well I have them installed. And yes the 5.1 set definitely makes a difference even over the 5.1 speaker set up I had. You hear so much more. Anyways, back to the review of this set.
The Tritton AX5.1 Audio Xtreme 5.1 Headset
I am controlling these with my Creative Labs X-Fi Extreme Gamer sound card. They are an analog input set so that works out well with no extra software needs to run in the background (big plus in my book).
I agree with what to following review had to say. These do sound great! Not right out of the box though. You do need to tweek it using your 5.1 soundware. Set them to a 5.1 surround sound setting and not the headphones option. I picked one of the creative 5.1 speaker sets and it immediately perked up. (I selected Creative Inspire T5400 in the THX Setup Console) I then tuned the equalizer to my preference. I found that the mid range (out of the box) was most prevalent and compensated with the EQ. The Bass sounds crisp at loud volumes. And yes you can crank these with no distortion.
The construction of the set is very solid, does not look/fell cheap and fit nicely, no adjustments were needed for me. The mic works great and sounds clear, according to Fossil.
You will notice that they are are heavier that a conventional headset, most likely because of the 8 speakers. Anyways, long story short, I like them. :^)

I use the y connectors on all of my headphone/speaker setups. And they all have volume switches to adjust either, or. The best balance for me is to just adjust the settings to the situation you have that day, or night. I feel the y adapters give the best adjustability overall.

I got my set, same as Specimen's, last night and couldn't get them to work right. Vista uses a SOUND dialog to adjust speakers and Creative uses their AUDIO console to do theirs. Either way my "center" speaker and Sub-woofer" had no sound coming from them no matter what I did. My speakers did, but the headset didn't. Plus I can't get the mic to work. Their web site says I need drivers but I can't find them. Bummer!

drivers? I'm not sure why. These just plug in where you speakers plug in. Did set your speaker set to 5.1 and not headphones?
I take it you have adjusted the separtate volumes on the "on cord" control center?

They would mean drivers for your sound card as there would be no drivers just for the head set. Some headsets that have built in memory for rumble do have drivers.

oh...take a read from Tritton web site
Q:The headsets play great, however I cannot get the microphone to work. A:Ensure that you have installed our drivers, as it is required to use the microphone. Also ensure that under both the control panel sound settings, and also the C-media control panel, that the correct microphone is selected as your recording device.

Thats wierd because on the same support page if you click "Does the AX51 have any drivers it states:
quote: The AX51 requires no drivers, it relies on the sound card having the correct drivers installed.
Aso there are no drivers of any kind listed in their Download page.
OH WAIT WHICH VERSION DO YOU HAVE: I see the TRI-UA512 [USB] does require drivers and is on their down loads. The TRI-AJ712 [audio jacks] does not require drivers. I hope you have the audio jack version as you will have a problem with the Creative 5.1 sound card and the USB.

Here's the update: Their web site verbiage is wrong; they probably did a cut/paste where they shouldn't have No drivers are needed. All speakers in my headset are working fine. I mis-cabled a cable. Microphone is dead as a doornail. Nothing I do gets it working. My old stereo headset mic works fine so it's not the sound card or Vista.
