I'm an unabashed First Person Shooter fan so remember that as I tell you about Mass Effect.

Mass Effect (ME) is a role playing game (RPG) in space. It has all the normal RPG stuff like; quests, stores, tons of dialog, cut scenes, modes, upgrades, etc. Stuff like Palo tells you he needs a favor from Paco so you take on that job to earn money and while you are doing that Frank hits you up to do another job to save his daughter from the bad guys which you do to earn more money.

The cool factor in the first few hours is that it's in outer space; space ships, Mass Effect "Warp" generator for space travel and the Citadel which is a huge spaceport that is beautifully rendered.

Last night I got three quests off world and they gave me an awesome ship too. Once in space you have a great galactic viewer to pick where you want to go and a planet surveyor to see if you want to land to look around.

Once on planet you perform the quest while collecting stuff! Killing bad guys too. Neat weapons, armor, upgrades, etc. They also give you a neat armored 6 wheeled vehicle with machine guns and cannon to drive around on the planet with. You get to do this with your squad buddies.

It's touted as a FPS combined with an RPG but the combat, while real time, isn't as accurate as I'd like it to be. Red triangles highlight the bad guys and you can zoom some weapons for a more accurate shot, but you need upgrades to get zoom on other weapons. Plus you need training to use certain weapons and I haven't figured out the training thing yet.

So far I like it. My bot buddies won't see me for a while though! More later!

I like this game! Playing it through twice! Has a lot to like and some stuff that I'd rather do without, but it certainly holds my focus for 2 hours a night easy. I jumped into a BF2 game last night and was bored to tears. I think I'm moving on until something new happens in BF2. AIX has V2 of their mod coming soon and now I hear there's a BF2 patch coming!

PCGamer just reviewed it and gave it a whopping 91 rating!

I think everyone in the FPS world has to start getting use to the RPG world a bit now. Game companies are all seeing the mass appeal of MMO's and are moving towards the RPGMMO world with FPS games, as well as other games.

Age of Conan is a hybrid as well. Mix of a FPS and RPG MMO. It's not 100% of either, but mixes elements from each.
Project Torque is a hybrid racing sim and RPG.
The up coming BF Heroes is a mix of FPS, Third Person Shooter, and RPG.
GTA4 is a TPS mixed with RPG and on a large scale on line.

Even look at things like BF2 and COD4, they are pretty much pure FPS, but have the added RPG elements of upgrades, ranks, etc.

My point is, games are going to this mixed genre and it does make things much more interesting and involving.

Now, if Mass Effect is only single player, then no way will I be buying (only by multiplayer games) but it does sound interesting.

I finally picked this up. Been on the fence for a while about it, but read the prequel novel this past weekend. Discovered lots of background info and decided it was a story I could get into.

It is a great game. It goes back to the old space exploration RPG's back in the 80s and early 90s.
