A painter and decorator has been fined £30 for smoking in his own van because it was deemed to be a workplace.

Gordon Williams, 58, of Llanafan, near Aberystwyth, west Wales, was on the way to buy teabags for his wife when he incurred the on-the-spot fine.

He claims the van is insured as a private vehicle and he only uses it to travel between jobs. He has lodged an appeal with Ceredigion county council.

“Of course there are tools and things in the van, but a barrister would carry about documents in a briefcase in his own car. This is no different to my mind,” he said.

I don’t smoke and am intolerant of smoking. However, this sounds way over the top. Besides, I still will vote for free will over the nanny state every time.

Coloured money, Excessive use of the vowel "u" in words like colour, honour, Provinces and Territories vs States, we say sorry alot, tag 'eh' onto the end of sentences, Provincial health care systems that cover everybody, bilingual, higher income taxes, higher sales taxes, approx 33.5 million people, no "right to bear arms" rather it's a privledge, known internationally as peacekeepers, we have three national parties of government (4 if the Green party grows), we don't vote for the Prime Minister/President only the local representative of the party. Law enforcement from coast to coast is electronically tied together. No FBI, CIA just RCMP and CSIS.....stuff like that. Alot more regulations, alot less suing in the courts. Mandatory seatbelt laws, mandatory motorcycle helmet laws, drinking age is 19.

The politics are pretty much the same, alot of grandstanding, and 'tow the line' thinking and such.

BTW smoking in the workplace is banned in Ontario. And in Quebec they have made it mandatory to have a set of snow tires on your vehicle in the winter time. Ontario may be going that way too.

I like Canadian Bacon!

Two drunks walking on a railroad track, the first says "Man is this the longest staircase you have ever been on?" the second says, "Yes, but what gets me is the low banister."

I smoke, and I have been a non smoker, I agree with no smoking in buildings, but in outdoor or private places, I think it should be open.

I have an issue with those guys, and ladies who overload with perfume and aftershave, then stand in line, elevators or are so strong that when they walk by you can taste it and have to hold your breath

I don't smoke and have been a non-smoker since I was 27. I think the only place smoking should be allowed are two places, your own home and your own car provided you have no children and keep the windows up at all times.

Smoking should not be allowed in any public access areas either inside or outside.

I smoked pack a day for 15yrs or so. I tried quitting and failed several times miserably. I was an addict. It had me in its clutches, I couldn't go anywhere without them, I had to plan ahead to make sure I had enough when out camping, and double them up when drinking.

It took a realignment of my attitude towards smoking, a strategy to combat cravings, and a nicotine patch for six weeks. Been clean for for a least 14 yrs now.

I admire anyone that can quit smoking, even though I have never smoke. I go for Skoal, bruddah. Just a pinch between my cheek and tongue gives me all the flavor I need......(remember Earl the Pearl?)

I never smoke in my house or in my truck when anyone is with me. I take issue with people not wanting smoking in public for a few reasons.
1. Car and truck exhaust is everywhere, and unfiltered and more dangerous.
2. If the smoker is aware of people, and where his smoke is going, and moves so no one is downwind, I see no problem.
3. As I said before perfumes are just as irritating to me and others!

I was up to 4 packs a day and loved cigs. I got up from my comp one night and wanted to quit so bad it hurt. I took it to the LORD and got serious with HIM and he took the desire away. I went to sleep that night and never wanted another cig, never craved one either.

I did the same with drinking. I drank 21 shots of Jack in 1 hr and 15 mins and did not get high and asked the LORD to take it away and never wanted another drink. It took 2 weeks for me to find and pour out all that stuff. I was hooked and loved it. It was nothing to get up on Saturday and drink a half gal. of Crown Royal befor lunch and then go buy some jack for that night.

Boy I am glad that that is over and gone.

Geez Bifocal, I feel wasted just reading that. I hope I can make it from here to the bedroom.

I must really be a lightweight, 2 shots and I'm toast.

We don't directly elect the President here. Course, that distinction is more or less a technicality now-a-days the way people whine about the electoral college.

Oh, I smoke a pipe from time to time - say about every other year. A nice Almond tobacco, very aromatic. Cigarettes stink, however and that kept me away from them.
