1) Don't go more than 400m from your spawn point, except on Concourse if you spawn more than 400m away from the gate to the center area. In that case, wander up to the gate, and just lurk there the whole game.
2) Hide, and occasionally peek over/around and fire off a single alpha before hiding again. The light, medium, and heavy mechs on your team can handle the enemy.
3) Join the team with the most assault mechs. After all, you're a big target, and the more big targets on your team, the less chance the enemy will shoot at YOU! If one team has 2 Osirises and a Puma, and the other had 6 Templars, Kodiaks, and Masakaris, join the one with the 6 assault mechs. You'd only slow the little mechs down anyway.
4) If charged by mechs of differing tonnages, always pick the smallest, least threatening to shoot at. That way, you'll be more likely to get the quick kill, even if you die. And after all, your kill ratio is the most important thing, right?
5) Carry so many weapons that you shut down every 2nd time you fire. Since you're 870m away from the battle anyway, it's not likely you'll be hit. Shutting down gives you the opportunity to type colorful chat messages about that cheating Shadowcat that keeps killing you.
6) If the tonnage mismatch is good enough, get the rest of your team, and go camp in the opposition's spawn. This has two advantages: a) It lets the other team's smaller mechs get to you more quickly, and they don't have to look for you, they love that. b ) If you are killed, chances are you'll automatically show your teammates how unimpressed you are by their utter ineptitude at protecting you by splashing them with damage from the 12 tons of ammunition you're carrying.
7) When designing your mech, drop all the speed in favor of armor, weapons, and ammo. If you read 1), you know you don't need to move anyway.
8) If you have smaller mechs on your team, and you see one fighting at close range with an enemy assault mech, be sure to help him out by destroying the enemy assault mech when he's right next to it. Or better yet, just shoot your teammate. Chances are, he's critical and wants to respawn anyway.
9) If attacked by a Flea, always try to get in a turning match with it no matter how many people are shooting at you. You'll get it in your sights eventually. Really. I'm serious. Yep.
10) If you take an assault mech with jump jets, which you probably will since over half of them have 'em now, make sure to jump on at least 2 of your teammate's heads. It's funny, they'll appreciate the joke, and it's good DFA practice. Oh, and the more often you do it, the funnier it is.
11) On maps with barriers, like Factory or RubblePile, make sure to put your mech directly in the space between the barriers. This will make sure that ONLY YOU can get kills by shooting through that spot, and after all, your kill ratio is the most important thing, right?

Good point......I think they should take JJs away from each and every assault mech.
And Puff forgot a rule;
12. If picking a small mech, consider the Wolfhound. Very hard to hit and well equipped with "lag" armour. Rest assured it is your madskilz as a pilot that make you so successful, lag is only an issue for the other guys.

I like what you've got there Festus, but remember these are the commandments for assault drivers. Maybe the start of commandments for lights?

Hmmm...depending on the mission and the mech - #8 applies to me. But then again, isn't matching a mech to your fighting style a major and important thing? Also - I think that (again, depending on the mission) fire support can be a very important thing. Not that *everyone* should be fire support - but there is a time and a place for someone to sit hidden, pop over a hill, and rain down a bunch of LRMs on the bad guy...

Patrick,
Hipster, Festus and myself (and occasionally Pace) have been playing Mercs fairly regularly as of late.
So, I guess, you're going to start playing Mercs again and beat me down like you did in TA?

When I get the new system set up - I hope to drop into a few games with "y'all..."
I'll make sure to run a heavy, slow assualt and stay well away from everyone :D
Side note - anyone who has any advice on running mercs through a router, I would appreciate it. I tried briefly, opened all the ports that I could find info to open, and still no joy until I disconnected the router...

I picked it up again too. Silly me.
It really is amazing how many Assault Mechs are on the playing field. Who would have thought there were that many c-bills floating around?

well, i don't think three games (all ff or training) count as "beating you down"... at least not near the level that the rest of those folks were doing to me.
besides, i rarely ever hit your uller. well that and i am so rusty right now that you would probably take my scats and ravens to the cleaners.

Load it back up. The game has changed a bit post-patch. It's still pretty assault mech laden. (and I'm still pretty rusty - still trying to get my KDR better than 1-1) But, the game has changed for the better in my opinion - not just ERPPC snipefests and poptarts (oh, they're still there).
Oh, and have I mentioned I hate 3rd person view abuse ... er, use yet?

What router? I run Mercs behind an SMC barricade router and it works fine.

Part of the problem may have been my OS - I couldn't even connect with the router disconnected - but I did get farther without it than with it...

I for one have been QUITE happy to see the return of a few OMO's to MW. With Win2k gone it isn't always easy to find you, but we usually manage somehow.
CMO's server is a good place to be when it's up, and the Bawk zone isn't too bad either unless Rabid thinks you're trying to TK him by walking between you and your target! .
Actually saw Pace the other night, and have been seeing Festus more often as well. Still irritating Aged by "stealing" his kills, but over all the rust is falling off of the old farts.
Then there's Hip...................
The undisputed Lord of the Battlefield....... Master of the Sunder! I swear that there isn't an ounce of rust anywhere on that 95-ton Mech, let alone a scratch on that high gloss paint job, and that's after 30 minutes on Manorhouse!!! WE'RE NOT WORTHY!!!!
Point being that I'm glad to see you guys when I do. Now the question is are you guys up and running on voice comms, or not? If so, I'd love to hook up with you there as well! Kind of hard to type while my Templar is getting hammered by HeavyGun!

Never argue with an idiot, they will just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. |

Obake,
I will PM you with the address for our private BCOM server.
As far as Win2k MW4 Server being gone... well that isn't quite true. It is just a click away from being back online. I just have not been running it due to lack of usage. The server itself has been upgraded and will run Mercs even better than before. I just need a reason to run it
So... in the meantime (IN THE MEANTIME!!! - Helmet 1992)... we have been playing on Knights of Davion T1 or the Chiken's BAWK server.
