It's turn out that navigating by a star can be a little imprecise...

Back in December 1978, songwriter Randy Brooks was sitting in with Elmo and Patsy Shropshire for one of their performances at the Hyatt Lake Tahoe and performed a song he'd recently written Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer. The song went over well and the Shropshires asked him to give them a cassette so they could learn it themselves. They recorded it the following year and self published it in San Francisco.

And the rest is ... a piece of Christmas history.

The Shropshires divorced in 1985, but Elmo kept recording as Dr Elmo (he's a veterinarian) and he's also a competitive runner, including being an age group national champion in the U.S. 5K Cross Country Championship in 2018 and is ranked #1 in the 5K.

There comes a time, in the life of an elf on the shelf, when he thinks it's time for a change...

This one isn't an advent related post, but I thought I'd do something a bit more inclusive today.

Hanukkah begins at sunset this evening. If you're an gentile (or goy), like myself, you probably have no idea what Hanukkah is all about.

Fear not, here's the scoop.

Chag Urim Sameach!

I'd be remiss if I didn't also include another holiday during this time of year. No, it's not Kwanzaa. That's not until the 26th.

It's Festivus.

Although Festivus gained national attention from Seinfeld, it actually dates from 1966 and is the creation of author Daniel O'Keefe. He started the holiday to commemorate his first date with his wife Deborah 3 years earlier. His eldest son, also named Daniel O'Keefe, was a writer for Seinfeld and featured it in an episode entitled The Strike.

A Festivus celebration involves a dinner, a Festivus pole, the airing of grievances, feats of strength and, of course, various miracles.

God Rest You Merry Gentlemen is one of the oldest extant carols and dates from the 16th century or earlier.

The first line is an example of manners of speech that are no longer in practice. In the carol, the term "rest" means "to keep, to cause to continue or to remain". So, a modern translation would be something like God keeps you merry, gentlemen (or to be completely modern, people or folks might replace gentlemen ... I know I like it when the women in my life are merry as well.) Getting further into the archaic grammar aspect, although it's often song with "ye" instead of "you", this is not grammatically correct because it refers to a direct object rather than indirect object of a verb.

So, my gift to you this Christmas is a gift of archaic grammar! Are you feeling merry?

Anyway, here's a modern interpretation of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen ... which you now know is grammatically incorrect.

I hope you and your families have the merriest Christmas.

Merry Christmas, old friends!

Merry Christmas my friends. Aged thank you for all that you do!

Novus Ordo Seclorum

Knowledge is power... has been since time eternal. Arcane knowledge is thereby ultimate power and can
therefore lead to ultimate corruption. Wisdom (and the experience that comes with age) is a serum for corruption.
Perhaps that is why there are so many Old Men with Arcane knowledge and so few young ones...
