Over the weekend, Igner, my warrior, had his first adventure in the Deadmines.
He was wondering about randomly killing things, (I can't remember what or why) when a message pops on on the LookingForGroup channel "LFM Deadmines". Igner answered the call and was told to stand by for an invite. The invitation arrives and, upon seeing the Igner is a warrior, he's asked if he can tank. "Sure" Igner asks the group to please give him a few seconds of "quality time" with the enemies before they engage.
He ponders asking for the lead so he can mark targets, but decides to just be a team player. The group lead is a level 18 gnomish rogue named Felgos. (Definitely want to remember that name ... more on that topic ...)
The group heads inside and starts clearing, including clearing the undead keepers of the miners' guild cards that many of the group need. Unfortunately, there's another group with the same intent. Felgos suggests the group just go ahead an enter the dungeon and that we can come back afterwards.
The group clears their way through to the entrance without much drama and begin their run. After a few trash pulls, Felgos warns Igner not to pull so many at once. Igner was focusing on the elite enemies, particularly the casters and letting the non-elite enemies beat on him. Ah, such is the life of a meat shield ... errr ... tank. Igner agrees to be more careful.
Progressing further into the Deadmines, Felgos develops a pattern of running ahead and throwing his knives at the nearest enemy. Igner jumps into a defensive stance and tries gathering enemies that respond angrily at Felgos' actions. It's pretty difficult to gather them because aside from Felgos, the 2 mages in the group are also getting unwanted attention. Needless to say, Igner had his work cut out for him.
Things continue mostly smoothly through the rest of the Deadmines, with Igner noting a few things. Felgos also seems to enjoy opening chests along the way until a member of the group suggests that the group members roll to make the distribution of the chest contents a bit more balanced. Felgos really likes throwing knives and, as he is the lead, he occasionally marks enemies - always suggesting that the melee enemies die rather than the casters. Igner mostly ignores Felgos' suggestions because he knows his job is just to keep the enemies' attention fixated on him (i.e., why he charges the casters and lets the other enemies chase him). Igner recalls mentioning to the group to please give him a few seconds of "quality time" with the enemies before they engage and he wonders if the message got lost or forgotten, particularly with Felgos.
As the group enters the goblin foundry, Felgos continues throwing his knives and Igner has given up keep fights under control. Felgos complains to the healer, asking if he has a "heal ward" on him. Later, he asks the healing if she spec'd for spells and she confesses that she's spec'd feral (she's a druid btw). Felgos roles his eyes, but Igner points out the feral is the appropriate leveling spec for a druid and reassured Felgos that things should be fine.
As the group enters the final room of the Deadmines, the dreadnaught room, Felgos continues his knife throwing and running ahead of the group. This causes the healer to explain that she's not a high enough level to heal 2 tanks. Igner snickers quietly...
At long last, the group reaches the dreaded Edwin Van Cleef. Igner suggests a strategy - have a mage sheep an add, while the rest of the group kills the other add. Igner will keep the attention of Van Cleef and the add that's been marked for death. After the first add dies, we'll start to work on the second. Things go smoothly at first, but when the first add dies, Felgos goes for Van Cleef. Meanwhile the second (still alive) add begins running amok. Igner grabs his attention, but the combined forces of the enemies result in the death of the group.
They all run back to the Deadmines and fight a few patrols to return to the dreadnaught room. With renewed purpose, the group engages Van Cleef again, this time successfully ... mostly. Van Cleef died, but so did 4 members of the group. Felgos survives. Van Cleef gives up his chest piece and Felgos wins it and abruptly leaves the party.
Again, Igner has to run back to the dreadnaught room to finish his quest. Afterward, the healer revealed that after the "heal ward" comment, she didn't heal Felgos at all and rolled "need" on the chest just to tick off Felgos. Igner told the healer (Melle) that he admired her sense of humor.
There are a few morals to this story.
Don't piss off the healer, especially if you're dps.
The tank should pretty much always have the lead to mark targets and keep things less, uh, chaotic.
And, if you find yourself in a group with a gnomish rogue named Felgos, you might want to reconsider your options.

Great story! Your morals to the story are definitely appropriate (and should be standard learning). As for the VC fight... I don't know why but every time our Druid tank and I get into that fight VC pops a total of 6 adds... even if the first two are still up (in one case we had the 2nd as a sheep the entire time). I can't figure out why... unless it is related to overall party level (24, 22, 3 - 19s)

Wisdom (and the experience that comes with age) is a serum for corruption. Perhaps that is why there are so many Old Men with Arcane knowledge and so few young ones... Arcane OMO - Circa 2001
