OK. The idea of paying to play never strikes me as great... but so far, this game seems to be worth it. Since I have a month to decide before I actually have to start paying, I'll let you know how worth it it is.
I'm having a blast with it. There are Role Play servers (I'm on one) and they handle things well. Teaming is on two levels: your immediate team and your SuperGroup, which would be akin to a "clan". There could be an OldMenOnline Supergroup...
Anywyas... that is what I am currently playing. I most likely will be clearing up some drive space by removing Mercs.

I was watching this one a while back, but the subscription part really turned me off.
How much is it?
I love the premise of the game though.

Well as most of you know by now I have no problem with subscription games. I have played a lot of them. IMO there are so few games that can compair to MMORPG's that you would have to buy 3-4 of the best games over a year to make up for the enjoyment I get out of a subscription game. Too bad you cant find 3-4 good games in a year. More like 1 or 2. And even if you could it would work out to about the same price.
Simply put unless the game has serious flaws you will get what you pay for. I wouldnt pay $5 a month for Diablo II when it was new but Ill gladly pay $15 a month for CoH. It is that good. The main thing that makes up for the sub fee is the live updates. Like a minor expanion every few weeks or each month. New content is added constantly. Bug/exploit fixes are added as soon as they are ready. Not when they get a enough for a full update. Cust service is generaly a lot better as well.
The only game I have ever seen that added as much content for no added cost as a MMORPG was IC with insect invasion. Every other game made you buy a expantion. Some MMORPG's do have retail expantions but they tend to be huge additions. Almost like a second full addition to the game.
I have played enough of these games to have a good feel for what they are about and if they are worth the extra price. Some are most arnt. The best of them are well worth the price. The worst of them arnt worth the price of the box alone.
CoH is worth it right now. It will continue to be worth it if qualty content is added on a regular basis. From what they have now it looks like that should happen. They havent screwed up yet so its a good indication that they wont. I recomend this game highly.

Currently, if you buy a month to month subscription it costs $15 a month, it gets lower as you go 3, 6 and 12 months.
I looked at the numbers, and my initial response has always been "NO!", but when you consider that new content gets added, server support for large populations, the cost of most games range between $40 and $50, and that you may buy 4-8 a year (as I look back I know I have); it can actually be cheaper.
1 month for $14.95 = $179.40 3 months for $41.85 = $167.40 6 months for $77.70 = $155.40 12 months for $143.40
I buy maybe 6 games a year and they average $30 (between new and used). That is $180.
So... currently I have a 3 month subscription plus the "free" 30 days. If I figure that if I am getting seriously bored with the game by the end of the 3 months, I'll not renew and it cost me the price of two games... saving me $20.
Besides, we all Pay-to-Play... just a degree of how often and how much. There is the initial cost of the game, but when you get companies like Sierra who support games in a half-arsed fashion; the appeal of Pay-to-play makes sense.
Lets look at this another way: I have been playing NWN for the past 6 months. The consistency is an issue since a: server population is always an issue, b: gameplay is not always consistent (especially with the server I had been playing on which was always getting tweaked), c: the developer has little incentive to support a game, other than their reputation or the game makes bucket loads of cash (Think: Half-Life vs. HomeWorld2). I don't really see any other games I am interested in picking up other than Ground Control2 and Tribes 1 & 2 Will be out for free next week.
The idea of having a persistent character who grows and develops while interacting with other players apeals to me... more than regular FPSs like Tribes, Unreal, or BF1942.

What server are you playing on? Im on Victory. My mains are Hivemind and Morticus. Hive is a illusion/radiation controller. He has almost the punch of a blaster and can hold/buff/debuff. Morticus is a defender with storm/dark blast. Mainly works with sniper/slow/knockback. Can you say kite?

Honestly, I don't know how bad the lag would be for 56k. I have a DSL connection and I have not experienced lag from the servers (I have playing NWN however).
Bugger: I play on Virtue right now. 2 characters: Ressev (Scrapper - Dark Melee/Regeneration) and CatMan (Defender - Empathy/Dark Blast). levels 12 and 9 respectively.
Maybe I'll make a character for Victory. BTW, I post as Bravarda on the forums there (had some oddities with logging in under my usual name).

lol...
Fair enough. City of Heros is a game in which you play a Super Hero. You start out with very basic and minimal powers and over time, gain more powers as you fight crime in Paragon City. Think: "I want to be a comic book superhero" and this ends up being your game. You can't be any type imaginable, but the basic "types" are there. We'll see how much gets added in over time.
Right now there is no real PvP (so your typical griefer lives a half-life of non-existence). However, in a year, there will be an addition called City of Villans which will essentially add PvP. By that time the player base will be pretty established and hopefully they will have some sensible rules to prevent unwanted PvP.

personal note: check out the new MMO called guild wars, it is supposed to be an MMO based on a single payment (like diablo's battle.net, or something like that). checkitout ! it should be available to d/l from may 1st, and the servers will be open while E3 is on for free !
single payment is the way ! check out diablo, neverwinter nights and so on, although these are not MMO , they are quite fun !

Yes Guild wars looks verry good. I have been watching that closely. It looks like something OMO will realy get into.
Not sure about bandwidth but I would guess its not too bad. The game files are smaller tham most MMORPGs so that tells me that they did a good job with how they programed it.
@Petri I can change servers my char are around your lvl. Think Hive might be 14 or so but the others are less than 7. Was actualy thinking of starting on one of the servers that came up after launch. A lot less ppl on them. I remade Hive on Champion server and have him at 8 or 9.

Champion hmmm? The nice thing is that there are plenty of players to team with, the draw back is that there are plenty of players to run into. Indoor missions at least give you your own space till they are complete.

Player Vs. Player. I.E. others can kill/hurt you.
Bugger, lets make a Super Group on Champion then... hmmm what would we call it? I know: Old Men Online!

Ok sounds good. I made some improvement on Hive so the new one plays a little better. He is set up for both group and solo play. He is set up as a boss killer. 1 on 1 he will own anything he can hit. Got a rocking combo with Accelorated Metablism and Hasten. Hardy any downtime. By lvl 12 I should have no downtime at all.
Think Im lvl 10 now and am about ready to hit Parez Park. Need to group for that place if you want to get anything done.
I will be on all day and into the night. I dont have Teamspeak loaded so I need to get that. Give me a tell when you make a char. I can power lvl you fast with this guy. He would prob combine best with a blaster or defender.
A defender with Dark Blast and Storm would be perfect. You could keep the guards at bay and kill them while I take down bosses. Thats a good solo template too. Good area control and high damage. Ive played it and was very pleased with it. Snipe...Snow Storm...DoT....Gale....rinse and repeat.

I set up a character called CatMan on Challenge last night. He is a defender with Empathy/Dark Blast. He can keep your health up while you crunch through the bosses while sniping at the enemies. Course, I can easily restart him since I have nothing time-wise, invested into him.
Hasten (Accelerate Metabolism) is a nice power... makes hovering in combat very useful too. Should make a good team then.

I wouldnt take empathy unless you always want to be in group. I can already group heal with radiation. What I lack the most is area control. I need somebody to keep all the escorts buisy while I pond on the big guy. Keeping them buisy and dead would be even better.

Tell you what, look for CatMan tonight on Champion... I'll redo him so he has the Storm/Dark Blast.
What do you think of scrappers?
