Just take this info into consideration before you splash out.
I was in a similar situation as yourself, looking to purchase a graphics card for the latest games and I initialy chose a card that was compatible with my motherboard. That was my first mistake Keep in mind, that 'high end' motherboards cost a lot less than 'high end' graphics cards.
So, like yourself, my motherboard had an AGP slot, so I looked at AGP graphics cards. Unfortunately, at the time, I didn't take the two considerations below into account.
1. Will future graphics card development be PCI express based for the foreseeable future? 2. Is SLI compatibility a major consideration?
Even if you decide that PCI express would involve too much additional expense for the upgrade, there is still the decision whether to purchase a SLI compatible Graphics card.
A couple of 6600 or a single 6800 SLI compatibe card might be a better buy than a card that does not allow for upgrading other than a complete replacement.
I'm not in any way an authority on this subject, but I think the points above are worth looking into. There are some good reviews on running 600's in SLI. 6800's and other AGP cards are getting cheaper because of the better(faster) PCI express cards coming out.

Excellent card, I've got the 800 PCI X version and love it. Make sure you have at least 1.5 gb of ram for your system while your at it. I've got 2gb in mine.

I just checked the 3Dmark5 benchmarks for the card and it is way up there with the best. Like target said, it is an excellent card, but please note, he does have the PCI X version.

fuddy fuddy, fuddy. i have been down the sli road before. remember voodoo extreme cards running in sli? 6 months later a little company called nvidia showed up and my sli setup was yesterdays lunch. motto: hang on to what you have, and only upgrade when necessary, and then whole hog, not bit by bit trying to keep up with yesterdays newest trick. whose to say that in 2 years a 6800 sli setup wont be garbage, and there will again be a killer single card solution. if it wasnt for this one game, my geforce 3 still runs every app on my comp.

I run an X800 Pro and BF2 runs most exxxxcellently on it.
So, IMHO Silver this card is not worth it. Not cus its not a worthy card, but cus YOU SUCK! You can't follow orders man. remember MechWarrior? "I'm just gonna go look over this hilolock?" WHAM! BAM! ZOCK! KAASOWEY!!!! Silvers turn into Scrap metal.....
Other than tht, its a great card, you should look great what with all the detail in the bullet holes you're riddled with. :P

Silver Silver Silver, I hear you. Those concerns I have also thought about and it does end up sometimes like rolling the dice. It may well be that going down the SLI route could prove unworthwhile in the long term as a new 'super mega card" replaces the two SLI cards one might happen to buy. Actually I did take that into consideration which is one of the reasons I opted for the EVGA 7800GTX. I have one graphics card, it's PCI X and just in case I'm foolish/wise enough, it's SLI compatible. Whichever way we go, its a certainty that you can never be ahead of technology that is already being designed to diminish the value of your latest purchase. 7800GTX cards are already $100 cheaper than I paid, and it's sucessor is just around the corner.

I saw a nvidia 6800 PCI with 512 meg on it on the web, but could find no place to buy one. So there is no telling when all cards will have 512 meg, but it should be soon.

festus, this is why i want the best looking card, so when you riddle me full of holes i can see all the gory detail. ohh and BTW, i remember you used to like me getting all shot up, as a distraction so you could pad your score by knocking off the peeps shooting ay me.
thinking about it maybe i will take a pass on this one, as it probably wont be much fun with Aholes like you doing nothing but hunting and killing me, for sport, just to piss me off.

I just have the x700 256 and it works pretty good for me. I just suck at the game :( ATI released a new catalyst driver last month saying the former one has some issues with BF2. I think it helps. Don't forget to get the latest driver if you decide to get this card. The drivers that come with them seldom are the latest.
