Damn it some folks have all the luck.
Apparently Gamestop stores (Babbages, Software Etc, Electronic Boutique, Gamestop) were sent very late versions of the FreeLancer Beta. They were handing these out to customers, sometimes for pre-ordering and sometimes just to get rid of them.
Hey WingCom - you one of the lucky SOBs that got a copy... are you by any chance WingC3 on LancersReactor?
I called my local Babbages today and found out they had 10 copies of the beta... I thought to myself... then he said BUT I can't give you one. I received a note from Corporate yesterday that said the Beta was ONLY for Employees. He also told me that really sucked because he had no one in the store that was even remotely interested in the Beta (or FreeLancer for that matter)
On the positive side he did indicate that he would ask during a conference call scheduled for Monday. I indicated I was really interested due to my desire to set up a server. We went on to discuss Mech4 and Win2k MW4 Server... surprise he knew about the server and indicated that he thought it "was" once one of the best on the net.
So although I will not likely get a copy of the Beta... it was kind of rewarding to hear that he knew about Win2k.

no, no joy here either, arcane, the local shop got 4 copies, and they all went to employees.
i'm registered at LR as plain ole wingcom, surprised nobody grabbed that handle yet!
although i would have loved Lev Arris
i heard on some developer chat that they do plan to release a demo before the game hits stores. on the server side, i will not be able to host a server, as the software will not allow you to play and host on the same machine.
i had a quick thought, and called ebgames. they also have pr cd's, but he said microsoft told him it was illegal to distribute to any but employees

Damn... oh well only 18 days left anyway. I just wanted to get a little ahead of the bell curve (so to speak). It seems that they didn't do a whole lot of research on which ports were required for Multi (at least that is the impression I got from a post over at LancersReacter by Stinger). I was kind of hoping to get it all fired up, determine what the real port and bandwidth requirements are and post them prior to folks getting the game and having questions.

well, arcane, i'm going to be in denver all next week. theres a lot more game stores there then here in my tiny new england town. so i'll beg and whine to see if i can get a copy of the beta disk. if i do, i will gladly forego my chance to play, and send it to you, if it means you will get a head start on a server

I appreciate the sentiment, WingCom! You don't have to go to that extreme.
You could help me out though if you do find a copy. Do you have a program called "Ethereal"? Anyway, it is a network protocol analyzer that captures every single packet on your network (well at least to and from your network card). If you could load that up and then send me the capture file (with some info as to the servers IP and your IP during the capture) I can get most of the info I need from that. From what I've heard the bandwidth requirements are around 3k per second (I find that really hard to believe)... if so I should be able to host 233 connections (although I've also heard that 128 simultaneous is max and I suspect that 26 connections for my 768/768 will be more likely). Then there is CPU and RAM to consider... Ah... such fun
I'm really hoping to be able to run a charater on the LR Elite server as well. I can imagine wanting to run a couple of characters on different servers due to lag issues etc. It would be great to maybe get both of our servers (you are still planning on hosting one yes?) listed on LR.

well that sounds like a mission to me, so i'll try really hard to track down one of these disks, but i been getting frustrated today. been calling around and get the same , employees only stuff as for my server, it seems not. i been rereading the posts, over at LR , and it seems that if you host a server, you cannot also play on that same server, ie: requires 2 comps, and the jury is out on if you can actually host on one machine, and play on another from the same IP
quick off topic question, when i click on reply to post on this forum, it loads 169 screens before i can post. no prob for me, but it must play hell with the 56K crowd.
