Ringworld and HB indicate that their experience with this forum's performance is not very satisfying.
What is your experience? Is it better than ezboard? Is the performance decreasing? Is is worse in certain forums over others?
I would really appreciate your comments. There is not much else I can do with this server to increase the performance and I really don't know if it is a server issue anyway. The CPU on this server is rarely above 10% and it is a Dual Xeon 500 Mhz with each proc having 1Meg cache. The system memory is over a 1.5Gig and it is running Ultra3 SCSI with 10k RPM disks. This is a serious server class machine normally capable of supporting multiple high volume sites.
I do not see any change in latency between my site and other sites on the internet... so I'm not sure what is going on.
The database size is 4 meg. That doesn't seem too big but maybe it is and we need to move up to SQL. Maybe we need to move to a commercial host?
I don't know maybe I'm worried about nothing. I need your help and comments...
Thanks.

I do like this forum better than the EZ Board we used to use.
I have noticed just recently(the past week?) the the pages take longer to load than at the beginning.

to me it seems it sends the information but there is so much. are the menus you have above java? perhaps simplfying the design ..
I know croft on our side has been trying to streamline the forum for DAB and a few other clannies. He basically cut down the fat to deliver a very straightforward design.
http://www.dab-online.net
Have a look and compare.
BTW he is on a comercial server with t3 connection I think.

This page took 0.56 seconds to load
now arcane you know that i am on one of the worst connects of ANY OMO, so as far as any one thinking they have pages slow at loading HA!! i scoff at that! because the only time that i expierience slow downs is peak times of itnernet usage anyway, or when its still loading a lot of heavy SIGS what i mean is that if any one is going to experience slow downs it would be me befor anyone,

took about 1.9 seconds to load according to the time below, actually took about 15 seconds. When I go back to the forums menu, takes about 1/4 of a second. Just started noticing it in the last week or so. I do like the structure of this forum better than ezboard.

Given what you just indicated HB, it is either a problem with your browser and the way it handles javascript or it is a problem between our ISPs.
Like I indicated before, the number at the bottom of the page is server-side. It indicates how long it took the server to "create" the page. I have started logging session information (I just need to learn how to read it now). Maybe I can get some info from that.
UPDATE: Wow - HB there are some serious issues between this server and your ISP specifically. I don't know what it is but... out of 20k+ log entries there are only 200 with the client close time over 1 second. Of those 200 your IP is related to 176. There are some really long ones in there too, like you indicated, almost 15 seconds. The longest I could find was 13 seconds but... if you take into account that there are likely over 15 files to download on each page....
So, I really don't know what to do... some of the files that take the longest are very small (1k .gif) files that are local.

According to the time below it took .94 seconds, but I counted 22 seconds in my world!
It is slower then it started out to be, but it is still better then EZboards hands down.

Interesting Toothless.
Here is the offending entry for you...
quote: 2003-02-28 16:20:02 Client IP removed - Server IP removed 80 GET /forum/avatars/professor.gif - 200 13686 541 17391 Mozilla/4.0+(compatible;+MSIE+6.0;+Windows+98)
The number 17391 = msec so it really is 17 seconds. Since most of the other entries for your webpage open transaction are below 1 second (less than 500msec) I would suspect that there was some packet loss and there was retransmissions. I don't know why that should hold up the entire page from loading though. In my browser, the page will load I just don't get the little icons or avatars... the world is still spinning sometimes though.
Thanks for the input... I'll keep looking.

This took 1.08, but I am using dial-up right now on a shared modem hub. I like these forums and have no issues with them... maybe the new meter at the top is slowing things down?

You think I am a spammer? Look at HeartBurn!
Actually, I think the forums did slow down a bit about the same time the "internet meter" at the top of the forums was added. I'm sure it is taking extra time for that to re-load everytime the page is refreshed.

Well, you would be wrong, Petri
Don't you guys know anything about how the internet and browsers work (JOKING)
Actually the ITR.gif doesn't come from here at all. When your browser make a request for this page the server sends a lot of info.. part of that info is the URL for the ITR.gif (and URLs for all those darn siggies ).
Anyway, that .gif is 4682 bytes in size... that's all. Heck, my siggy is bigger than that (I just noticed how much bigger... )
You are just mad cause I blew you outa the water when I was getting it to work
Sorry about that There is that better?

Yours looks really good PaceMaker. In fact you lame ol' 56k shows very consistent performance from the log perspective. Not lightning fast but steady (no spikes, drops)

Could the fact that Heartburn's siggy is 404 have anything to do with it?
I don't know how the internet or browsers work, please teach me, Oh Wise One.
