Is this something we should be using??

PlanetBattlefield has released a new version of the 1.4 Beta Patch (v1.4.2), which include several bugfixes and gameplay tweaks.

For a full list of the changes and download links, please visit the PlanetBattlefield homepage:

Older or Cath would know better than me, but I think I read that you can't run the server as ranked with this beta.

Right you can't log into any ranked server with a beta patch. I'm really not sure where you can use it.

The beta patch is an open test for EA. If you're interested in testing it for them, download it and play it and report your issues to their official forums. Supposedly, they are going to use this information to make the official 1.4 patch better, but only time will tell about that. I played the first one quite a bit, but have not played the second one yet.

Biggest changes I saw, cartillery is gone, they don't allow you to drop vehicles on buildings, other vehicles or people, though there are ways around it, I also have noticed that performance seems to have improved a good bit.

Also, they have included a new map, Road to Jalalabad. It's similar in feel and design to Sharqi Penn., though there are no aircraft, with a bit more open areas outside the main city. The US has an uncapable flag, the MEC do not. Personally I like the map, but it's impossible to defend the MEC main base unless you have a dedicated group to do so, and then the US has a field day taking the rest of the city over.

EA does have some servers running the beta patch set up as ranked. Their servers, and a few select others that are listed in their forums. They say they are ranked to test the stats to make sure they're working correctly. The new map is cool, the patch seems to be good, so far at least, but it is not backwards compatible with the 1.3 patch. Basically you make a copy of your original BF2 install and then patch the original. When you want to play 1.3 you rename the patched BF2 to whatever and rename the copy to BF2.
