You mean what 2142 IS... while everybody has talked about how much better QW, Crysis and now FoW is going to be, none have lived up so far.
Quake Wars----NOT Crysis---Probably NOT FoW---Maybe NOT
2142---not perfect, but still hasn't been outdone yet. Teamwork based FPS are hard to do...despite all the flaws, Dice has a few generations headstart. I am not saying they are the best developers, but they make games that are fun to play. The Desert Combat lineage is great, but great weapons and vehicle models don't make a great game. Also factor in the other stuff like servers, persistant stats, unlock items, rankings... there's a lot of complexity in pulling all of the game aspects together.
Also, has anyone ever seen screenshots and pre-rendered video that didn't make a game look like the next greatest game ever?

Maybe I'm missing something, but Crysis looks to be mainly a single-player game. Yes, they are advertising multi-player, but FarCry does multi-player and from what I hear it isn't very good.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the beta available this morning on FilePlanet
I've played about an hour, makes QW look like a kids game. FL rocks imho. It's still a beta so there are bugs to work through. You can read the forums to get an idea of what still needs to be worked on once you get the beta.
I also prefer it over Crysis. You can jump into FL and start playing right off the bat. There's a little bit of a learning curve, but it won't stop you from enjoying the game, you can learn as you go.
Drones are awesome, there the new annoying claymores we love so much in BF2. But you can defend yourself against them if you pay attention. If not.... BOOOOOOOM.
I'm running everything on high with an 8800GTX, with no issues. I'm not seeing performance issue complaints like I've seen in the Crysis forums. But this beta program just got going. Not seeing any lag issues either, still early though.
Game environment is beautiful (wipes tear from eye). I still don't like the vehicle physics as much as BF2, but I can live with them, not like QW or Crysis they suck. The fun aspect in this game is with the infantry.
Remeber this is still a beta, game balance issues are being worked on/discussed/debated. Developers seem very interested in game balance and are craving input.
When joining servers, it tells you the city the server is located in, hope it's like that in the finally version.
Weapon kits are nice, and secondary role you play is also cool.
Controls are still not customizable, but they are working on a patch to fix that. I customize my keys a great deal, so I'm having a real hard time playing with default key settings.
Hope I didn't over hype the game, probably violated a dozen beta disclosure rules, but I've really enjoyed what I've seen so far. That's all I feel comfortable disclosing right now.

How does the gameplay compare to Battlefield? Are there spawn points, flag captures, etc?

Well, so far the game play is interesting. I like the break down of gear between primary and secondary weapons: Primary: - all have pistols Assault - light machine gun with grenade launcher Heavy Assault - heavy machine gun Sniper - sniper rifle Anti-Vehicle - AT weapon Spec Ops - sub machine gun Close Combat - shotgun
Secondary Role: Ground Support Emp Tech Drone Tech Air Support
The controls feel sluggish compared with BF2/2142, even with fine tunning the mouse. Additionally, the UI is troublesome at present due to buttons that should be clickable not being clickable. The gameplay, other than that, is so far fun. More later.
