It's not free... they nickel and dime you to death as you rank up. Here's what was written about it last week on NY times...

"Gentlemen, I would like to propose a new 'Play for Free™' format for the up and coming Battlefield Heroes."
"You mean our Team Fortress 2 knock off?"
"The very same."
Noises of intrest around the board table are heard.
"The 'Pay for Free™' program is identical to the microtransaction system found in a lot of Asian games and the NCSoft game Exteel introduced a month ago in the USA."
"So, we hook them with a game where players can play for free but to improve their character they have to buy 'upgrades'?"
"Yes, exactly."
"Doesn't Exteel allow you to earn money for upgrades?"
"Ah, yes, but we won't allow players to earn ingame credits. They have to purchase them with real money. Exteel is so small, the USA players won't know the difference."
"So, we have what peopel will first perceive as a Team Fortress 2 knock off that upgrades players weapons and clothing."
"Add in the in game advertising to this and possible expansion into physical production and we should start making more money for less effort."
"Will we be introducing Action Figures?"
"King Fu Action grip? Oh yes."

I'll stick to Webkinz, thank you very much:

Thank God my daughters aren't into this. But this is quite the rage right now... we just had to buy a couple of the stuffed animals for another girl's birthday party they went to.

“The existing Battlefield games are fairly deep; you have to be pretty good or you’ll die pretty quick,” Mr. Florin said Friday in a telephone interview from Geneva. “Now we’ve toned down the difficulty, shortened each game session to 10 or 15 minutes and made the visual style more cartoony.”

Looks like the noobs have one. Incrediable.

Cadaver, my kids were each given a webkinz pet over Christmas and it is pretty interesting how involving it is.

Yeah Stingray, as if the difficulty of BF2 were anywhere in the region of Team Fortress2, CoD4, or Unreal. Or are they meaning making the game less complex (and easier to code), as opposed to easier to play.

Webkinz took over after intense Club Penguin action... she just got another new one the other day. I just wish she took care of the real freaking dog.

I've got 4 girls eagerly collecting Webkinz. It is getting so much that when they had a birthday we requested "NO webkinz please".

Back away from the Webkinz...we had 100 beanie babies and couldn't sell them on Craig's List. So we gave them to kids that stopped by our yard sale! Like BentProp says, second gen BB!

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, bourbon in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

So, basically what they are saying it's going to be a rich mans game. If you can afford to shell out monthly for different upgrades, then you will have a heads up on the comptetion that can't spend the cash. So, at the end of the day you end up with elite, well financed teams beating the shit out of poor guys that can't afford the upgrades. Hell, that happens to me all the time when it's even steven? I ain't gonna do it. I am still waiting for Mech Warriors to come out with their new thing, THAT should be fun.

Actually, with regards to the next BF, it will mostly be played by kids since it will be free and as the micro costs will be low, a lot of kids who are MMO players will be willing to spends 10-15 a month to pay for upgrades.

As for Webkinz: I have no intention of dropping a dime on it after the free year and once we get the fence fixed in the back yard and get the dog promissed to the kids, the Webkinz get back seat.

I watched the entire interview with two of the DICE leads and they expect less than 10% of players to pay for anything. The upgrades are also supposedly not "functional" upgrades (i.e. more for show than go). The concept is good I think (from both a business model and game prospective), but I for one will not be playing.

The game has 2 MAJOR flaws:

1) Third person action. Booooooo. Can't stand 3rd person unless it's on an Xbox360 or similar and has the best camera ever (camera angles can kill a 3rd person in seconds for sure).
2) It uses "levels" to match players. In other words it has the same big issue as WoW and the level racism problem. If someone is a level 3 they have to play with a bunch of level 3s. Gay to the max. I can kick the crap out of any of the higher level players but I have to play with noobs cause I have only spent 1 hour playing and not 30 like the 6 year old down the street? WTF?

Most forums that I have seen about this game have said it's just a distraction ploy for EA. They wanted to test this business model and with the delay of Bad Company now (no PC version so who cares anyway?) and the far off BF3 (speculated 2009 release) EA wanted to keep the BF "franchise" in the spotlight somehow.
