Unfortunately, it will most likely be the last major update for XP.

Not a Vista fan boy, but I have it laying around so I may as well use it. Glad to see they finally got the performance equal at least.

My guess, in the next year or so with newer games and drivers now being developed with Vista and DX10 in mind, the gap will get bigger.

I've finally reached a point I can now cut XP loose on my system and just stick with Vista. All the issues I had with it are now gone with the addition of SP1 and an extra 2GB or RAM

I agree with Stingray. I've been running Vista for 1.5 years and other than the sound BS I've complained about it is a much more stable platform than XP, hands down! Ironic, but the only problem that nearly killed my system was Vista's SP1. I had my Avast anti virus running and SP1 choked on it. I've never experienced this performance problem people talk about or it's so slight I don't recognize it. I run Crysis nearly full on with no issues so I'm happy.

My recommendation is simple; if it's not broke, don't fix it! If XP is stable for you and doesn't BSD, or crash your game, then stick with it. If XP is not stable for you, then think about a clean install of Vista 32 Home Premium, as Vista is nearly bullet proof. IMHO!

I'm going to take the Vista plunge here soon. I bought the 64 bit version, just want to make sure all my "t's" are crossed before I install. Won't be a fresh install though, I'm going to do an upgrade. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I'm not impressed with my upgrade Havoc. I tried to cancel order after it had been shipped for my first build (too late). So check this article from this week:

Nice information Nosey, Quote: "Windows 7, is scheduled to go on sale in January 2010".
So if I bypass Vista and wait the year for "Windows 7" to stabilize it looks like my XP will be good till late 2011.......

That is an interesting article Nosehair. (kinda funny in a way too!) I wouldn't upgrade my business machine to Vista either!

I don't believe "January 2010" after Vista was delayed repeatedly before releasing, and it wasn't even ready then. I doubt Microsoft can get 7 out on time, and past release performance from Microsoft almost dictates that one should wait before adopting 7 out of the gate. So by my count, 7 is a minimum two years out for me. I have also read that there will not be a direct upgrade from XP to 7, but there will be from Vista to 7.

In any event this is just my gaming rig, a toy, and if I end up disliking Vista, I'll just re-install XP.

Wow! Those are cool programs! I bet Mister Softy (Microsoft) doesn't like them.....

edit: I started reading this Vista Tweak Guide last night and I find it concise and not above my head. In fact, all the Tweak Guides on this site are worthy reads. Here is a link to the Vista and XP Tweak Guide but the gaming Tweak Guides are on the left:

And Stingray, your link requires me to login, can you explain or copy and paste what is behind door #1?
