well I decided to go with Thunderbird. I had a little difficulty getting my old emails out of Outlook from my old machine to my new machine. I could export the outlook *.pst file and copy it over but then I couldn't import it into TB because it did not see Outlook on my new machine. So after some research (doh!) I installed TB on my old machine and imported the *.pst from outlook to there. I then copied the TB mail folder onto my new machine and renamed a couple of paths in a config file and presto! I have all my emails andmy address book from Outlook on my new machine.

Here is a step by step link if anyone else is thinking of doing something similar.
