"... Up all night with Freddie King,
I got to tell you, poker's his thing
Booze and ladies, keep me right
As long as we can make it to the show tonight"

Freddie King was known as one of "the Three Kings" of electric blues guitar (BB King and Albert King were the other two).

My introduction to Freddie King came during a TV show called In Concert, which ran on ABC during the early 70's. (Anyone else remember that one?) One of the shows featured Grand Funk (I was a huge fan at the time) and Freddie King, who was touring with them, was also featured. It was simulcast on the radio and I recorded it.

Freddie died in 1976 (at the age of 42) due to complications from stomach ulcers and pancreatitis. Friends claimed he died due to the stress of his hard partying lifestyle and poor diet. It was said he preferred bloody mary's to solid food to avoid wasting time setting up his shows. So, those lines from We're an American Band sound pretty accurate, huh?

I'm Torn Down, as done by Freddie King

By the way, the original broadcast I referred to is on YouTube. If you want to skip to Freddie, he comes on at about 20:00.

Going way back this time ...

Arthur "Blind" Blake (1896 - 12/1/1934) was an exceptional blues man noted for his intricate style of guitar playing that mimicked the style of ragtime piano.

It's unknown where he was born, with historians suggesting Newport News, VA, Jacksonville, FL or the Sea Islands (based on a reported tendency to slip into a Geechee or Gullah dialect during recordings).

Regardless, I love his style of guitar. I've tried it, but I don't sound anything like him.

He's a two'fer ...

"The Mississippi delta was shinin' like a National guitar..."

The National Reso-Phonic Guitar Company makes resonator guitars in California. It's the spiritual successor to the National String Instrument Corporation which was founded in 1927 by John Dopyera and George Beauchamp. Beauchamp came to Dopyera asking for him to come up with a guitar that wouldn't be overwhelmed by horns and percussion. The result was the resonator guitar which features a resonating cone or cones that focus the sound of the strings and provides natural amplification. In 1928, Dopyera left the National String Instrument Corporation and formed his own company with his brothers, forming the Dobro (DOpyera BROthers) Manufacturing Company. By 1932 the National String Instrument Corporation merged with Dobro. Beauchamp joined up with Adolph Rickenbacker and went on to manufacture what is commonly thought of as the first mass produced electric guitar - the Rickenbacker A-22.

The Dobro name was purchased by Gibson in 1993.

The aforementioned National Reso-phonic Guitar company was founded in 1989.

Some of the best resonators are made in my home town of Hagerstown, MD at Beard Guitars. In fact, Paul Beard plays in a bluegrass band with one of my buddies from high school.

Ok, enough history ... how about some music?

Here's Dust My Broom, the Elmore James version played on a 1933 National Duolian.

Great history lesson Aged. I'm impressed how it ties into your own history. :-)

Novus Ordo Seclorum

Knowledge is power... has been since time eternal. Arcane knowledge is thereby ultimate power and can
therefore lead to ultimate corruption. Wisdom (and the experience that comes with age) is a serum for corruption.
Perhaps that is why there are so many Old Men with Arcane knowledge and so few young ones...

I Can't Quit You Baby, Led Zeppelin

... seriously, Jimmy Page must be some sort of alien being capable of growing extra fingers on command or something.

This song was written by Willie Dixon and was first recorded by Otis Rush.

As a Terp, this is the guy I think of first when I hear the name Albert King.

But this is Tuesday bluesday, so this post is about the "Velvet Bulldozer", one of the "Three Kings of the Blues" instead.

His nickname was on account of his large size and his smooth singing style. He also drove a bulldozer for his day job early in his career.

He generally played a Gibson Flying V guitar strung with light gauge strings to accommodate his use of bends. Naturally left handed, he played right handed guitars flipped upside down. It's said he never used the 6th string when he played. Stevie Ray Vaughan credits him as his biggest influence.

Here is Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan playing King's signature song, Born Under a Bad Sign

Most blues tunes are in 4/4 time signature. Occasionally, you'll hear 3/4.

But, there's a notable exception...

Gregg Allman wrote Whipping Post in 1969. He'd been on the verge of giving up music altogether after failing to make a name for himself in LA. His brother Duane, called, saying his band needed a vocalist and Gregg had a bunch of new songs.

The song featured 3 triplets followed by an accented 2 beats. Duane noted the unusual time signature immediately.

Duane: "That's good man, I didn't know you understood 11/4."
Gregg: "What's 11/4?"
Duane: "Okay, dumbass, I'll try to draw it up on paper for you."

Anyways ...

"Barry starts her off ..."

Robert Cray, Right Next Door (Because of Me)

Fun facts:
Robert Cray was the bass player in Otis Day and the Knights in the movie Animal House.

He and his bass player, Richard Cousins are childhood friends.
