The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in America's history. It's effects gave additional impetus to the Great Migration of African Americans from rural Southern states to more urban, industrial states in the North.

In 1929, Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie wrote and recorded a song about it.
As Led Zeppelin were working the untitled fourth album, Robert Plant suggested they include a version. He wrote new lyrics, largely true to the original and Jimmy Page wrote a new guitar riff for the song. Another noted feature of the Led Zeppelin version is John Bonham's drumming.

Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite (some say he's the inspiration for Elwood Blues) did their own version, mostly based on the Led Zeppelin one.
When the Levee Breaks
One last note in what is becoming a looong post...
So, what is that thing Ben's playing?

It's called a Weissenborn guitar, sometimes called a Hawaiian slide guitar. They were first developed by H. Weissenborn and sold from the 1920's to 1930's. The main feature is that the body continues up through the neck, making it impossible to play conventionally, so you'll mostly see them played like a lap steel guitar. Replica Weissenborn-style guitars are still made today.

funny thoughts follow i wonder if the rain that caused that flood was related to great hurricane in miami and florida Clewiston the town i grew up in was totally inudated ( might chk spilling on that word ) anyway we grew up with the frear that it could happen at any time, my Dad worked for corp of engineers , his job during hurricanes he rode the levees around lake okeechobee and opened and closed flood gates
in retrospect always fllowing the the paths of hurricanes in florida and being aware of the paths, i believe it probally brought the rain to mississipee
just a thought , whne i saw the date it brought back memories , of always watching for hurricanes anbd the job my Dad had

OK, I've already featured Catfish Blues and Beth Hart previously, but as you'll see, Ms. Hart doesn't know the words and has to fake it, so it's not really Catfish Blues anyway...
And, I recently discovered Eric Gales and I'm blown away, so I've got to feature him in a Tuesday Bluesday post. Although, he's right handed, he plays left handed (because his brother, who taught him, is left handed) and, if you look closely, you'll see he actually plays a right handed guitar.
Meanwhile, I still feel challenged when I have to play an F chord ...

The House of the Rising Sun is a traditional folk blues song of, as is the case for many folk songs, uncertain origin. Most sources trace it back to England and is named after one of the "bawdy houses" or possibly a pub by the same name. Others trace it to France and references to Louis XIV (the Sun King). Regardless, Americans placed it in New Orleans when the song eventually made it to North America.
Sometimes called Rising Sun Blues, it was first recorded by Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwin Foster, in 1933. Later it was recorded by Roy Acuff, a friend of Ashley's. Of course, today, most people are familiar with the version by the Animals from 1964.
Most people know the song as being from the point of view of a young man, but over time it has been performed as being from a young woman - which adds some interesting twists on just what, exactly, was the real House of the Rising Sun. Of course, most are brothels. There are 3 locations in New Orleans for which there is some historical evidence of hotels, brothels or bars with that name. Other possibilities are that it was a prison. Still another suggests that it was a sort of medical facility where prostitutes would go for syphilis treatments. Since the contemporary treatment at the time (mercury) wasn't effective, checking into one of those facilities would be fairly permanent. Yet another theory is that it doesn't refer to the facility itself, but rather its proprietor. Offbeat New Orleans suggests that the real House of the Rising Sun was at 826–830 St. Louis St. between 1862 and 1874, and was named for Marianne LeSoleil Levant (which translates to Marianne the Rising Sun).
Anyways, here's the song ... and, just for some variety, played on a baroque lute.

Maybe I'm jumping the gun here, since it's only November, but I'm ready to put this year in the can.
At times, it feels like I'm just Waiting for the Big One.
The first time I saw Peter Gabriel in concert was back around the time of his first solo album. A friend got me tickets in row D, center at the Stanley Theatre in Pittsburgh. He opened with this song - just him, a mic and a piano. How good were the seats? He could've used a shave.

You're probably familiar with some of Jake Holmes' (the guy in the middle wearing glasses) work. During the 70's he had the nickname "Jingle Jake" having written a number of commercial jingles. Remember, "I'm a Pepper"? That was him, with Randy Newman. He also put "The Softer Side of Sears" to music. Prior to that, he was part of two parody folk groups (think Weird Al, or if you're old enough Allan Sherman). The picture above is of the second such group, Jim, Jake and Joan. (The Joan is Joan Rivers, by the way).
He also recorded some of his music on himself, and that's where this begins it's turn to the blues. (So, of course, I'm going to change topics for a bit ...)
Early on, Led Zeppelin was my favorite band. The 3rd and 4th albums I ever bought were both by them (Led Zeppelin 4 [Zoso] and Led Zeppelin II). Eventually I got around to buying their first album as well. Whenever I need to remind myself how good Jimmy Page is, I only have to put on I Can't Quit You Babe to be recalibrated.
A lot of Led Zeppelin's early albums included blues covers, but their first album had a song, Dazed and Confused, that to me, seemed to be a new blues creation. It turns out that was wrong. If you dig a little into Led Zeppelin's music, you learn that they engaged in a fair amount of plagiarism and Dazed and Confused is no exception.
It turns out that the song was actually written by Jake Holmes and included on his 1967 album "The Above Ground Sound" of Jake Holmes. Around that time, he opened for the Yardbirds, which featured Jimmy Page on lead guitar (having moved from the bass when Jeff Beck left the band). According to the Wikipedia article on the song, "According to Holmes, "That was the infamous moment of my life when 'Dazed and Confused' fell into the loving arms and hands of Jimmy Page."
Holmes knew that song would be included on Led Zeppelin's first album, but he took no action until the 80's, when he requested a writing credit without a response. In 2010, Holmes sued Page and the parties reached an undisclosed out of court settlement.
Here's Holmes' original version.
Here's Holmes doing an solo acoustic cover from 2015.

Ok, so who are these women?
They are the tribute band, Zepparella. It seems only appropriate to have a cover band for the more current version of the song.
... And Gretchen Menn (the guitar player) is easier on the eyes than Jimmy Page ... especially these days.
