Since you're Jonesing ...
Let's go on a musical journey together.
As most folks know, the blues originated in the deep South among African-Americans and draws from West African musical roots. The impact of those roots didn't just cross the Atlantic Ocean, it also influenced the music of the Sahara Desert.
I listen to NPR on my way to and from work a lot and sometimes they feature something about music. As is often the case, it just seems like some music journalist showing off what he's heard that must of us haven't - and when I hear the clips, I'm unimpressed or, at least, think the level of praise doesn't match what I'm hearing. Sometimes, though, there's a gem and that's why I listen. On one particular occasion, the story was particularly effusive - words like "guitar gods" and "Robert Plant and Bono's favorite band". The story was about a group that call themselves Tinariwen. I was pretty impressed, so much so I ordered one of their CD's as soon as Christmas was over (because nobody got it for me for Christmas ...). They are a Tuareg band from Mali.
Traditional distribution of the Tuareg people
I did a little more research and began discovering more music by other Tuaregs. Aside from the West African influences, its modern adaptation originates in American Westerns featuring singing cowboys and later, bootleg albums by Dire Straits, Santana, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Kenny Rogers and Don Williams. Homemade guitars were replaced with real ones and eventually, sometime in the 80's electric guitars were added to the mix. The result is something that's been called "desert blues".
Here's another Tuareg, Mdou Moctar, with Tarhatazed. The lyrics are all in Tamasheq, so I have no idea what he's singing about, but WOW this guy can play! One commenter on this video said he's like if Jimi Hendrixx was reincarnated in the desert with a chip on his shoulder. He has one of the most unique styles I've seen (up there with Sonny Landreth).

That was absolutely awesome Aged! Now I have to agree with Pace though... no Jimi, not even in the same league but he definitely can play the crap out of that guitar in his style.

"The band is just fantastic. That is really what I think. Oh, by the way, which one's Pink?"
So, what does Pink Floyd have to do with the blues? Outside of Seamus, from the Meddle album, for fans from the 70's and on, not much.
However, where did they get the name for the band?
They had been calling themselves the Tea Set until Syd Barrett, who was with the band at the time, (Shine On You Crazy Diamond is an homage to him) discovered that one of their gigs featured another band by the same name. He came up with a new name on the spur of the moment, changing their name to "the Pink Floyd Sound". Incidentally, they were originally a rhythm and blues band. The name is based on the given names of 2 blues men - Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

This one's Pink.
I Gotta Woman (sound familiar?)

Looking For My Baby, by Floyd Council
