I've been playing Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance using the FAForever client lobby. FAForever updates the game a bit (the game came out in 2007) and also provides a connection capability to play online multiplayer (the previous service, GPGnet, went offline in 2011). Supreme Commander is the spiritual successor to Total Annihilation and Forged Alliance made some needed adjustments. Supreme Commander 2 never really caught on - a lot of players found it kind of dumbed down.
The good news is that there's still a reasonably active community (a lot of Europeans) and the game itself costs less than $3 on Steam.
I'm getting rolled a lot, but it's still fun. You'll need a decent connection for online multiplayer and a reasonably powerful CPU (particularly for large air battles). If you're interested, grab SupCom (as it's known by fans) on Steam, download the FAForever client and look for Prae.
At least until WoW Classic, that's probably where I'll be.
